Date: 2008-11-01 New user - works great I picked up a copy of V10 (standard edition) solely because it was on sale for 49.95 and I wanted to play with voice recognition. Installation (on an XP home machine) went flawlessly, however I must say the the archaicic registration process and the inability after the first day or so without registering, would keep me from buying another different Nuance product. The Quick Start guide did not follow the installation process exactly but worked out OK using the advice provided in the guide to initially accept the default options.
With 10 minutes of initial training then running several of the tutorial examples I was up and running with very little trouble. Out of about 800 words in my first document only about 6 were wrong. Being able bodied I just use the mouse and keyboard to correct the few mistakes in recognition.
I feel that the user interface is well though out and works quite well.
Five Stars
Date: 2008-10-29 Online Educators and Students: Try This! I purchased this software two weeks ago and it has saved me TIME. Unlike other users I have not had any installation problems. I've never used speech recognition software before. Based on my experience I think it is valuable to complete the tutorial that is part of the software package. I rarely have to correct an entry. I'm still learning some of the commands that are part of this software otherwise I enjoy it. I'm using it in my school work, as an online educator to generate feedback, composing messages (including this entry), etc... I've already recommended it to several of my peers. With a little patience this is well worth the effort.
Date: 2008-10-28 Maybe my expectations were unrealistic? I find that I must spend a LOT more time setting this up than I had planned. I am not entirely sure that it can do what I wanted, but I need to poke around a bit more to be sure. So far, it is great for narrative-type dictation. What I had hoped to do, though, is dictate contact lists. Spelling out African names has proven near impossible. Trying to change formatting while in dictation mode is frustrating. Despite all of this, I am not going to give up on it yet. It just may end up being not as useful as I'd hoped.
Date: 2008-10-28 This program is absolute GARBAGE I'm not a computer "newbie" and I could not, after about 5 hours, get past the Visual C++ error messages as so many others are reporting even after consulting Nuance's knowledge database and following all their suggestions. Then I called my daughter in Nashville who is an IT graduate from Penn State University who has vast knowledge of computers and she spent another approximate 3 to 4 hours with me attempting to install this HORROR of a program.
I never did get it to move past the Visual C++ error message.
I don't understand why, if this is such a common error with this program, Nuance doesn't simply put out a patch to make the program work properly. Guess that would be too easy and not cost effective for them or something. I can't imagine the nightmares that anyone who is slightly "computer-challenged" would face attempting to install this mess they are foisting off on us as a functional worthwhile program.
Unfortunately, I did not try to install it before the 30 day limit was up so a refund is not possible - therefore, I wasted my money. Never again Nuance-Never again
Date: 2008-10-25 Poor Language Recognition Software I have gone through the training four or five times and have used two different language classifications such as general and South US - all to no avail. The program seems to recognize simple words, but when it comes to college level reading and/or conversation it types something totally different.
