Date: 2008-12-06 Very realistic I first saw this on deployment in Iraq. I was floored by how realistic this game is. They seem to have consulted some people who knew what they were talking about.
Date: 2008-11-25 Imagination is the mother of all invention I play PC games and Activision/Infinity Ward only has made only 4 Call of Duty games for PC's,and I will not purchase a game console. It seems the designers of this Call of Duty 4 game left their imagination somewhere, they certainly did not use it making this game, again Cpt. Price was resurected from death,he was killed in the first Call of Duty PC game when he led a raid on the German battleship Turpitz, then Activision/Infinity Ward resurected him for the Call of Duty 2 PC game, how do they bring back the dead. Call of Duty 4,what a rip,I wasted my money on this crap game,oh the graphics are really good,DVD PC games are the way to go,but why did they bring back that Capt. Price they should have left him dead the first time he was killed. My suggestion to Activision/Infinity Ward is,stick to WW2 PC games, make all your PC games DVD format,I really like the graphics good job there but as far as the rest of the game goes,it sucks,no plot, lame dialog, and why no American Special Fprces, except Marines and Marines are not special forces. I was considering purchasing the Call of Duty World at War PC game, but I can't find a single player demo to try befor spending my money on yet another Call of Duty PC game. I certainly sincerely do hope Activision/Infinity Ward solves their imagination problem by replacing the staff who designed this lame game with recycled characters, with the same lame voices, with no plot, and a lousy dialog, this is the first Call of Duty PC game that has disappointed me,except for the graphics.
Date: 2008-11-16 Overly Scripted and Interface Overshadows Game Play This review refers specifically to the single player mode. Single player mode is overly scripted, seeming more like a puzzle to be solved than a simulation of battle. The CQB house at the beginning of the game requires that you throw a flashbang into a room first in order to get the targets to work. (On that note, the game does not provide for the actor to throw the grenade AROUND the corner, but instead requires that you toss it in a straight line...not good.) There is no meaningful briefing before a scenario begins, so that much of the gameplay involves trying to figure out where the other characters went on the battlefield or what it is that you are supposed to accomplish. There is no cooperation between characters, and at least for the first two scenarios, there is no use of fire-and-movement using overwatch
(Modern infantry typically move under fire by suppressing the enemy with rapid fire from rifles and carbines and bursts of full-auto fire from link-fed light and medium machineguns. Ideally, each bound lasts about 3-5 seconds and when possible terminates at a new piece of cover. At the end of a bound, the element that just moved should then immediately begin the delivery of suppression from its own weapons while the element that was suppressing previously now bounds forward in a similar fashion. Process repeats until within hand grenade range. The enemy is then fragged and his fighting position assaulted.)
Instead of a cooperative system of movement and fire so characteristic of modern infantry squad combat, the characters in the game seem to just run merrily along to the direction of some unheard voice (actors, places!) and it's every man for himself. Not realistic.
The scripting continues...you have to use prescribed solutions to puzzle-like steps in the game story (picking up manifests and jumping to the ramps of hovering chinooks, etc). There is no allowance for innovation on the part of the player. Everything is strictly linear.
The game interface is a bit too involved. Key assignments don't make much sense. Aiming is unrealistic. It takes a lot of time to practice finding the proper keys to make simple actions happen. Fighting in real life is easier than this. You don't have to consciously think about moving from a run to a stationary crouch on the corner of a building and then firing. In real life, you execute these actions as one movement, with each task happening in parallel. In this game, each task much be performed in sequence, and that after pausing to think of which damn keys you have to press to make this occur.
The advertising for the product led to me believe that this was an attempt at a serious land warfare game. It's not. It's a puzzle game with shooting that is burdened by an interface that gets in the way of game action.
Date: 2008-10-29 Great War Game with Amazing Graphics Call of Duty 4 utilizes some of the best graphics I have ever seen. Faces are detailed perfectly and when you are outside it almost seems likes you're looking through a video camera. The storyline is great as well and the voice actors are top notch. I cannot wait until the next installment in the Call of Duty series!
