X4 home & student easy to use
I'm an old wordperfect 5.1 guy. I bought X4 home & student after using Corel's free trial program (at Corel's website). This is a very easy program to learn and use. Easily converts and saves documents into Wordperfect 5.1 format or MS Word format or many other formats. Easy to create PDF's or simply e-mail documents as attachments (either as wordperfect, MS word, or several other formats) Can also use wordperfect 5.1 "classic mode" if you miss the old way.

another MS clone that doesn't quite make the mark
To go completely negative on this product is to discount the feelings and thoughts of nearly everyone who has used this program since its infancy as the leading word processor available. Therein lies the trouble. Wordperfect's best years seem to be behind them and with every new release, this office program is forced to look and operate more and more like Word, Excel and or Powerpoint. There is also a nice integrated e-mail client, but compared to Outlook it simply doesn't measure up.

As a writer I know very well how publishers will bully writers and authors into only producing works formatted in the latest version MS Office. This is not acceptable both to the writer and to the user of Office X4.

In roughly 2000-2001, Microsoft obtained 20% of the stock value of Corel. Since that time, Corel has been battling an uphill battle trying to make WordPerfect fit into nice little Microsoft versions. The problem with that is that WordPerfect is not Microsoft. It was a completely independently designed program from the beginning. Thus, as a Microsoft clone, it fails horribly and for users of traditional versions of the software, it seems less and less like the program that they like and comfortable with.

Add the fact that publishers (not necessarily legal publishers) continually refuse to publish work outside the mainstream of MS Office programs. To top it off, WordPerfect Office X4 costs more than similar products from Microsoft. I hate to cave in like this, but if you are seeking a quality office suite that is compatible with Office 2007, buy all means buy the Microsoft Office 2007 product. It will prevent a headache and an almost certain letdown with your publishers, coworkers, editors and so on ad infinitum.

This is a beautiful product that would have been helped without all the helpless dependence on Microsoft to dictate its mandatory file formats. If you want to be completely free of MS, look into Sun's Star Office or IBM's Lotus series. They perform just as well or better than this and at a much better price/value. If you can get beyond the "Work in Microsoft Word mode" which I found irritating, You can be very productive with this. I highly recommend everybody to at least take a look.

WordPerfect fast, but quirky
The WordPerfect X4 loaded fast and easily. It works great with previous wpd files. I did have a problem with one installation on a Vista machine with Office 2007. If Outlook 2007 was opened before WordPerfect was opened, when the last WP document was closed (and a blank document opens), the package would crash and close. No ptoblem if we always kept one document open, or if we opened WordPerfect first.

Corel selling known defective product
I purchased this product and it seemingly was registered and loaded properly. It failed completely after a short use and I attempted to reload if from the disks supplied only to be stopped at 6% configuration. When reattempted, the product declared my i.d. number invalid, a defect confirmed by Corel on its website. I waited and tried again, successfully registering the product only to reach the same problem, stopping this time at 7% of the product configuring. The product and a completely inaccessable (by telephone) Corel stink.

WordPerfect X4 - What a relief! No learning curve.
I bought a new laptop for my writing and wanted to use WordPerfect--I really don't like Word. I'd heard only horror stories about programs not working with Vista, but I had no trouble installing Word Perfect X4 and was able to start using it right away. There are some interesting new features I'm going to enjoy exploring, but all my old favorites are still there: view codes, spelling options in a little box at the top of the screen (not at the curser--drives me mad with Word), uncluttered screen. Fantastic. Highly recommended.
