Date: 2008-10-01 Great Game Great game. I bought the stand alone version because I knew I wasn't going to play Half Life 2. My suggestion is to just stick with TF2, no need to waste your money on portal and once you beat half life you won't want to play it anymore. Game is worth it!!
Date: 2008-09-09 Great Game, played for 100+ hours It's hard to say anything bad about this game. It the best first person shoter i have ever played. The is humor and fun everywhere in this game, the classes are balanced, the options for play style are endless.
Steam keeps adding more to the game, maps ,weapons, game types and the user made maps and play types are also fun. The one bad thing that can happen is running in to a abusive player online, but that really hasn't happened to me at all.
Date: 2008-08-26 Overrated I've played many multiplayer fps games in my lifetime, as reference:
pc: counterstrike, team fortress (original), quake, battlefield, ut, tribes
console: cod4, halo, resistance, goldeneye
this one falls more into UT/quake where everything is sped up to superspeed and there is a smaller chasm of luck vs skill.
this is not so much like the original team fortress. the big problem is that deaths don't matter. this causes a ton of suicide players rushing to you left and right, which can cause a new player to be overwhelmed. half of the players camp (due to classes such as heavy, engineer, sniper) and the other half rush (pyro, scout). the campers end up with huge kill-death ratios (which again dont matter) and can essentially stay in the same spot due to unlimited ammo and health coming out from the engineers. Also, the games are flawed because games such as capturing points are located sequentially. this leads to everyone rushing point A, and when that is captured point B, and then point C. This makes the game very linear and boring. Also, there are games where you need to move a bomb to the other teams base. However, the bomb travels along a track so therefore everyone is congregated in the same place.
The only reason I can see someone getting this game is if they had a clan or group of friends. This game is very team oriented, which doesn't bode well on the public servers since it seems like 1)nobody has a mike and 2)everyone chooses whatever class they want.
Date: 2008-08-25 Way overhyped game I will start my review with "I am sorry". I am sorry that I just don't get this game. It is a fun multiplayer. Quake and Unreal are some fun multiplayers as well but I don't think TF2 is the best game EVER! as some people claim. In fact, I had way more fun with many other online shooters. I play and have played PC and console. I had a blast with most versions of online Halo, COD4, Quake, Unreal. There is more strategy with these games, better weapons, gameplay, better maps...on and on.
*Pros*
- Innovative graphics - Great sound effects - Online play is protected from hackers, cheaters - Large online community
*Cons*
- Maps are way too small. - Repetitive gameplay with NOT as much strategy as other games. Shoot, die, respawn. Shoot, run around, respawn. - Not much fun. - Not very many weapons, Valve makes up for it by adding only 9 pointless classes. - Way over-hyped.
A lot of these games are being over-hyped by blogs and other media. I felt the same way about Bioshock. If you want to play a game that everyone else thinks is fun (but really isn't), go play BZFlag on Linux and save a couple of bucks. Me, I am trusting my instincts. I have been playing games sense Super Mario Bros. Based on my experience, this game is just ok and not what others claim it to be.
Date: 2008-07-12 The greatest online shooting game EVER!!! That's a big statement there in the title of this post but it takes quite a game to have the pure impact and enjoyment that this game has had on the gaming public like this one has and continues to have.
As a long time player of Team Fortress Classic, (the previous Team Fortress game before this one) I was quite skeptical of what was to come next. The cartoony graphics, the been there done that type of game play, the long time wait may not meet the hype it has generated and the loss of things such as grenades that had been a staple in the game previous. It was a lot working against it but I was willing to give it a shot to see what we were in store for.
And boy am I glad I did. As its been a pleasant ride ever since.
The game set up is simple enough for anyone to get into or enjoy. You basically join a server that will have one of various different maps, each map having a different goal to it. Like one will be a capture the flag theme where the team has to bring a briefcase from the enemy base back to theirs in a set amount of times to win. Another will be capture point based where first team to capture all 5 capture points wins. And attack/defend themed maps where one side has to defend their capture points against the attacking team as time runs down.
You join a team that is either red or blue colored and pick one of nine classes. Each class having a different ability and providing unique game play all the while.
The various classes include: The fast running, but low in health points Scout, the all around, all purpose rocket shooting Soldier, the close range and burn all in its path Pyro, the sneaky and backstabbing, often times cloaked Spy, the long range head shot shooting Sniper, The health giving and supportive Medic, the Sentry Gun building wrench holding Engineer, the powerhouse and mow em all down in an instant Heavy and the bomb throwing and explosive Demoman.
And then you just jump right into the game. And that's really it. The fun will continue on from that moment on for many hours of sleepless nights playing.
You can change your classes at you want adding hours of repeatability to the game or master a class you instantly fall in love with. There are custom maps, new maps being added all the time by both Valve and fans who can make their own with the easily downloadable editor. Valve also had constantly been updating the classes, adding new weapons for you to get to them as you meet certain class specific achievements you have to unlock.
Valve has really out done themselves here with this one. It was worth the wait and even months later still continues to deliever on the fun and team based goals that this game set out to do.
Its simple and to the point yet accomplishes so much that other online based games can't seem to ever get. It doesn't wow us with realistic battles or graphics but continues on in the tradition that Team Fortress has started and even perfects it with so much more.
Sure no game is without its flaws. Like any popular game there are trouble makers in servers or connection problems and some many not like the constant changes being made to the game. But the pros outweigh the cons by far in this.
It has comedy with the unique voices each character has, taunts you can do to show up other players and so many more subtle little additions that add to the environment.
If you are a fan of online games and even want to find something new for you and your online friend to do. Look no further. This is the game that is must have and must play for all ages and walks of life.
The price is right, the time is right and the game is a must have experience. Don't take our word for it, check it out for yourself. The game sells itself the first time you play it.
Well I'm off .. Back to capturing the briefcase again, or is it trying to stop those from doing so...
