Date: 2008-09-14 Bad DRM - I can only install this game 3x and I paid $50 for it. $50 you get only 3 installs. If you upgrade often buying EA games is not worth it. I can still install the Diablo 2 I purchased years ago without problems. My mass effect license will be over in under 3 years at the rate that I upgrade my hardware and reinstall my OS.
Date: 2008-09-13 Unsuitable for international purchasers Requiring customers to make international phone calls to deal with the seemingly inevitable activation issues is ridiculous. Piracy here seemed on the downswing, as the legitimate products where not priced too highly and where superior. We are now seeing legitimate products not priced too highly, but are *not* superior to the pirate versions
Date: 2008-09-12 forget the DRM, this game is amazing. Any EA game that has been released for the PC has gotten beaten down by amazon's user base. They are annoyed that the technology known as DRM is in the game. Its understandable to not want to be treated like a criminal, but at the same point, great games get marred by these reviews. Go look at 1up.com, Gamespot.com, Ign.com, etc, and you will see that Mass Effect is an amazing game. I played 28 hours of it in 3 days(pathetic, I know). Its truly an amazing game. The dialogue system is great, the combat system brings nothing new, but it doesn't need to. The game is beautiful. Both in narrative, and graphical presentation. I have been playing games since Commander Keen. I have played hundreds of games, and mass effect is easily in my Top 5. Even if you hate RPGs like I do, Mass Effect is great.
Date: 2008-09-12 Terrible DRM, decent game The sidequests are poor, and there is very little roleplaying as all there are no real choices.
As an action/adventure game it is quite good.
However, this game has the same terrible DRM as spore. Don't "rent" this game from EA.
Date: 2008-09-12 EA is the Devil I loved this game as I've loved almost every Bioware RPG, unfortunately the DRM used by EA is a shameful joke. Shamus Young has it right, you don't defend yourself against your customer, you serve them. I can only pray that Bioware never associates itself with EA again. I buy games and replay them for years. But with this DRM I can only install it three times... EVER!!! If Battlefield Three is like this, I think they can kiss my business goodbye. For that reason it gets one star.
