Tomb Raider: Underworld Review (continued)

Date: 2010-07-10 Glitches Galore (PS3) A local retailer dropped the price on this to under $10 new, and I figured at that price point I could put up with a few known bugs. I was wrong. Even after a game software update, in Level 1 alone (Mediterranean Sea), I've encountered three bugs (items were missing, and cut scenes wouldn't trigger) and had the game crash my PS3 twice. Whatever jollies I might have gotten from the improved arsenal of moves and the upgraded environments and animation, have been obliterated by the necessity to reload, reboot and finally just restart the level. I'm a long time fan of the TR franchise, and eagerly awaited the successor to Tomb Raider Legend, however I don't imagine I'm going to get to see the story play out if the game continues to malfunction in this spectacular fashion. Such a pity since the graphics look absolutely fantastic, movement/combat have gotten long-wished for common sense upgrades, and Keeley Hawes gives another laudable turn as the voice of Lara.
For the self-flagellating types who figure on carefully picking their way through, bug-fix-walkthrough in hand, occasional crashes be damned, I'll add one more warning: be prepared to fight with the camera control. The automatic placement often seems engineered for Lara's imminent death and attempts to reposition the camera result in an eye-straining tug-of-war between the player and the programming. Not my idea of a fun time...
Eidos squandered a great opportunity here. Avoid this unstable mess, your $10 is better spent elsewhere.
Date: 2010-07-06 TR:Underworld For PS2 - Under rated Let me start by saying that I've been a huge TR fan since the very first one on the PS1. When Underworld was announced for the PS2, I was excited since I don't own a current gen console and my PC isn't powerful enough to run it. Sure it's not perfect with some quirky controls and camera angles, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and the storyline. If you're looking for next gen graphics, you will be disappointed, but if you take it for what it is, a PS2 title, it looks great and it's worth your time to play it. While it's not perfect, I think they did a great job with the limitations of the PS2. Underworld really reminded me of the early games like TR1, with plenty of exploring and puzzles. While I enjoyed all of the TR series (even AOD), some of the recent ones, such as Legend, had to much "gun play" and seemed to stray too far from what originally made the series fun; exploring ancient ruins. All in all, Underworld is my second favorite PS2 TR title, next to Anniversary.
Date: 2010-06-22 Definately worth it This has several chapters in which the adventure changes with each one. Definately worth the purchase. Some puzzles were hard but it added to the satisfaction.
Date: 2010-06-21 Awesome New Gameplay Style... Same Old Dull, Boring Storyline... This Laura Croft adventure features a completely redesigned style of gameplay from previous Tomb Raider games. Good news is that the new style of gameplay is totally awesome. Bad news is the storyline is dull and drug out making this new game just boring to play.
Date: 2010-06-07 Thrilling, Challenging, and totally worth it I, like many, have enjoyed the adventure of the Tomb Raider series, it's had ups and downs but this title is everything you'd want it to be. Our ninja-esque heroine Lara Croft is as attractive as ever and has everything she needs to succeed. You remember the wolves and bears and raptors? How about tigers, jaguars, giant spiders, undead tigers and warriors, and a kraken. (btw Thor had some sweet gadgets which you'll be searching the globe for) Plenty of puzzle solving and precise timing will keep you busy. I would say get this game if you have ever thought Tomb Raider was cool. You'll have a blast with Thor's hammer.
oh, and the plot is really fun and creative, it's nice to see such depth in a game these days, they actually did some research into history and didn't just make up their own planet with whatever they wanted. of course, they did take some creative liberties, but hey that's what makes it fun.
