Date: 2008-01-03 To many bugs and problems Trial version was good, but full version sucks. I put this on my mothers computer windows XP home edition and it gave me nothing but problems with the OS registry and the software itself. I re-format the hard drive 2 time and end up with the same results a messed up OS. Only time it happened is when I installed this software. Worst thing a bit defender it used to be a very good program now they false advertise and tell me people it works with Vista 32 and 64 bit and does NOT. I going with Macaffee I had them before and I wish I would've kept them. I will return this product for a exchange with Macaffee. As least I know there software runs on Vista and gave me no problems.
Date: 2007-12-27 BitDefender Total Security 2008 I used Norton for many years and then decided to switch to another program that used less overhead. Bitdefender seems to work well overall but it's user interface leaves a lot to be desired. Checking the programs settings and status are not designed well but once you find them they are functional. Maybe after some time I will get use to the interface but for now it would be nice to have a one-click menu to check the status on all the security programs running. An example would be adding more functionality to the taskbar icon like being able to stop all internet traffic. Time will tell if this program proves to be a good investment as a Total Security Suite.
Date: 2007-12-18 BitDefender has many features BitDefender has many features that should protect most users from Internet problems keeping their computer operational in this crazy world of attackers. It takes some time to configure the program to the user's requirements; however seems to go smoothly once programmed. Users have the option to disable features they do not require. It loads 2 to 5 times faster than the competitive memory hog products we have used prior to purchasing BitDefender. Helping a friend recover a badly virus infected hard drive; it caught 31 of 32 viruses, but missed a major one causing video driver problems before being corrected. Should a registry problem occur causing to BitDefender to cease operation, a total reinstall is required, resetting all parameters again. The scan disk does not provide a progress report and the back up feature is a mediocre option. Generally, for the casual user, BitDefender out performs most of its competition, but could use improvements.
Date: 2007-12-05 Try it first, then consider buying it First, most security software packages offer free trials. Try them before you buy since there is no internet security suite that works great on most computers. If they work great then come here or someplace else that has better prices then the manufacturer. Then just type in the installation key.
I am giving stars to security software I tried based on two criteria. First is how well does it protect, and second, what are the odds it will work well on your computer. I decided to give it three stars.
Caveat - This is not totally fair since if BitDefender works for you, it is the best deal out there for the price. You get two years of excellent protection for what others charge for one year.
At first BitDefender worked great on two computers, a super fast somewhat new computer, and an old 1.5 ghz XP computer, both XP computers built by me.
It gives 5 stars coverage when it works since it gives outstanding protection. Independent testing says it is great. I left it on my children's computer for almost the entire 30 day trial and it ran really fast and prevented all problems. I did not test the spam protection since my email provider does that well. However my children normally download all sorts of infected downloads and autoloading junk, and the computer can quickly get infected with nasty viruses(not lame cookies).
However on my computer I had the same problem as an earlier reviewer where the firewall and scanning turned itself off. For that reason I am guessing the odds of it not working are pretty good, and the consequences when it doesn't are pretty severe. In BitDefenders defense, they warn you with two big red X's that the protection is off. I was just too dense to look up what that meant. But since I feel the odds of not working are pretty good, I give it three stars overall.
Just to clarify, all other security software I tried gave me problems. Norton was the worst. I not sure why I tried Norton since we use it at work and I am not happy with it there (it has advantages in a network evironment), but I could not get it to do anything. Worse I could not remove it. I tried standard uninstall, a utility program on the Norton site, and standard windows methods including registry deletions. I finally booted up in command mode and deleted the program that way. However I then lost network connections and tried for three hours before I gave up and did a total new install of Windows.
McAfee is good but I detested the user interface on the 2007 version so I never tried the 2008 version.
I have decided to purchase TrendMicro again. But it has problems too, such as the 2007 version will not run on my children's computer. It conflicts with most security software. And forget about installing it if you already have viruses (Try it after BitDefender which did a great job of cleaning up my children's computer and that will not be a problem).
BitDefender, TrendMicro, McAfee, Norton and Panda will protect your computer well if they work. I just think TrendMicro has a better chance of working.
Date: 2007-12-03 Just didn't work for me... Unfortunately, I had nothing but problems with this software. The first time I installed it, the registration pop-up window kept popping up every time I booted up my computer. Customer service gave me instructions to fix the problem by having me go into my registry and make some edits. Then, just when I got this problem fixed, I serious system instability problems began to creep up. In one instance my internet explorer 7 shut down and was never fully operational again. Then I kept getting a warning that said "Remote Procedure Call Failed" and prevented me from right-clicking anything. In the end, I had to reinstall my operating system in order to fix all the problems that came up.
When it was working, BitDefender seemed like a really nice protection package - extremely bulletproof, intuitive, easy to use. In addition, their customer service was quick and helpful -- they understood my issues and promply refunded my money with an apology. The reality, though, is that there are a wide variety of systems and configurations out there, and it's unlikely that just one brand of software will be best for all systems. Sadly, it just didn't work with my machine (Sony Vaio FZ series).
