Madden NFL 08 Review (continued)

Date: 2007-09-02 nice! finally a very good game for the 360 that rivals '05 for regular xbox (my favorite madden.. but this might top it). Gone is the choppiness (for the most part) and the horrible cut-scenes to a black tunnel or the back of a scoreboard or whatever. Personally, I don't care about the radio-announcer. Madden was totally annoying too. Yeah, I agree, they could improve here but the game is near flawless where it counts: gameplay, graphics and presentation. The new animations are great and I dig the realism: you have to think and strategize with this game, unlike any other Madden.
Gripes are few.. personally, I don't like playing in the rain because the mud just looks fake and distracts from the players. Also, why can't we save a game mid-game? Previous Maddens allowed this.
Overall, love it. I was so harsh and critical of 06 and 07 that I never thought I'd enjoy another Madden.. well, here is a vast improvement!
Date: 2007-08-28 The Best Football Game on the Market, But Some Annoyances I had gotten away from playing Madden and its counterpart, NCAA, in the past year, but since I bought an Xbox 360 I figured I would get the latest incarnation. This is still the best football game there is, with in-depth play books, great controls and graphics that are finally starting to take advantage of the next-gen potential. New features that I like are the ability to spotlight receivers when on defense, allowing you to devote more attention to big play makers and the fact that some plays have built-in motion by the receivers. However, some of the old annoyances still persist, such as the CPU making impossible plays to come from behind. Two examples of that come from my Broncos franchise in which the CPU consistently makes catches in triple coverage and once ran back a game winning touchdown after I had pulled ahead with the game almost over. The running controls take a bit to get used to, as you now have to cover up the ball when in traffic or you back will probably fumble. This adds realism but is annoying as hell when you fumble 4-5 times a game just because you aren't used to the controls. I find it easy to hang 100 on teams on the easiest level, but the game gets maddeningly (no pun intended) challenging on higher difficulties. I get mad at it but I keep coming back for more, and that is the sign of a well-made game in my opinion. Gripes aside, you probably can't do any better than this until at least next year.
Date: 2007-08-26 impressing a tough customer WOW!!! this game is awesome I havent bought a madden game since 2005 I thought I'd try this years version to see if it was any good. This game is great franchise mode and superstar mode are a ton of fun. The graphics are amazing the player descriptions are almost perfect and the gameplay is as good as any other football game that will be made this year. You owe it to yourself to just try this game out i did and i absolutley loved it!
Date: 2007-08-24 better than 07, but not by a whole lot while some people may complain about the sound and presentation, which are no doubt laughable to say the least, the most important factor in any sports sim is gameplay. while madden 08 is a huge step up in regards to off field options (the addition of the fantasy draft and front office mode are MUCH appreciated) the play on the field, while different, when all is said and done is at about the same level of enjoyability as 07. on the bright side, all madden is MUCH more challenging in 08 (almost too much of a step up, imo). you will definetly not be seeing any 70 point shutouts this year. also the running game is much more realistic, in that it is now possible to gain between 5 and 10 yards on any given carry, as opposed to 07, in which you would either get stuffed for little or no gain, or bust one for 50+ yds. the weapons mode is also nice in distinguishing between "good" players and "great" players, and thank god they fixed the fatigue problem. however there are way too many inconsistencies for this game to rank higher than a 3/5. tackling is still IMPOSSIBLE unless you adjust the sliders. you WILL turn the ball over AT LEAST 5 times a game, whether it be through ints or fumbles, both of which are completely unrealistically prevalent. this evens out in that most of the time you will also force about 5 turnovers, but for stat geeks like me, this exchange drastically decreases your qb rating and you will most likely end the season with something like 30 tds and 30 ints. also, as always the 4th quarter cpu domination continues. if you are up by any less than 14 points going into the 4th quarter of a game, you WILL lose the game. it almost seems like you have a better chance of being down 7 going into the 4th quarter and winning than being up 7. Also, there is STILL no distinction between outstanding OLs and mediocre OLs. if youre facing julius peppers or richard seymour, or even someone like osi umenyiora, they will beat you around the corner, or knock you on your rear end, regardless of if your tackle is walter jones or some rookie ranked in the 60s.
all in all is it worth it? if you want the name recognition that the nfl license offers, and have patience and the self control to not throw your controller against the wall when you fumble on 1st and goal with the game on the line (because this will happen more than once), then i'd say go ahead and buy it. i just wish EA didnt have a monopoly over the nfl gaming market, and hopefully someday 2k sports will come back into the nfl picture.
Date: 2007-08-24 Madden 08 is O.K. I've played the Madden games for years the thing that I don't like about this game is the passing game I find it difficult to do. The francise mode is great.
