Date: 2008-06-19 Solid Game Bioshock was a good first-person shooter. The difficulty curve was sort of shallow, and the submersion suffered because every ten feet there was a free re-spawn point, which made death a little anti-climactic.
Date: 2008-06-19 Bad customer service, Good game There seem to be two common comments. First, many people say it's immoral to install software on your PC that you are physically incapable of removing (at least without some special tools and a lot of know how and maybe a few hours Googling). Those people are right. Second, many people say the game is a lot of fun and almost worth being violated, and those people are also right. Personally, i refused to pay $50 for a game that was so openly customer hostile. But it got amazing reviews so when it got cheap, i played it, finished it in a few days and really enjoyed it (although, honestly, it got kind of tedious at the end).
Bioshock feels exactly like a Deus Ex or System Shock game, only the combat is a bit better. The best parts of this game is the '50s setting and the little sisters/big daddies. Which has absolutely nothing to do with game play and so maybe shouldn't count, but it really is cool.
If only it didn't crash so often or didn't force my entire computer to reboot every time it did. If i exited the game, i couldn't play again until i rebooted my computer. That's frustrating but then, writing high end video games for a PC is pretty frustrating too. i lost some work the first time i played it, which i didn't like, and being forced to turn off my CPU monitor (which autostarts with my computer) before BioShock will play is ridiculous. But the game is cool enough that i'm still glad i played it
Date: 2008-06-18 Would not run I have no idea how good this game is. It would not run on XP (I haven't had any problems running previous games) and when I sent an e-mail trying to resolve the problem, their customer service sent me a note on what to do with a broken figurine(thanks!), which of course had nothing to do with the original problem.
So I now have an expensive coaster that I cannot do anything with.
I would suggest getting it on Xbox 360 and bypass the PC version.
Date: 2008-06-17 Great game! I got BioShock from the Steam service last year shortly after release and played it through 3 times. Twice on a 5 yr old WinXp machine and once on a new Vista quad core machine. Zero problems with either. Its not a perfect game, but for me to replay a game, it had to be fun and a bit different each time. (Well, the story is the same each time, but you have many(!) ways to do the combat>) Its a bit on the easy side even with the patch which allows you to disable the super easy continue feature. I've heard people in general have had less problems with the Steam version, but that's just anecdotal. If you have any doubts, just buy it from somewhere that will let you return it if it doesn't work.
Date: 2008-06-13 5 stars, and a very simple review. I bought it at release and it was worth the long dollar then. At the price it is now, the only reason you have to not buy it is if you only play multiplayer games. It does have an activation sceme, and it's a PITA. But you activate it once, and once you start playing it, you'll forget what a pain it was to activate. Kinda like windows, a necessary evil. Get it. It's a blast.
