Command & Conquer 3:Tiberium Wars DVD Review (continued)

Date: 2007-06-26 C&C is still very fun. C&C3 hasn't changed much since the original, especially regarding gameplay mechanics, but it's still very fun. This game was a steal at $38. The production value is very high, so the single player campaigns are worth the money alone. Online multiplayer is honestly much better than for Age of Empires III's ESO2, with a much better interface. Plus you get to rate the sportsmanship of others, and they keep tabs on disconnects etc. while awarding you the wins if the other players disconnect. Games are very easy to find and last 10-20 minutes usually. Balance between the 3 sides is not perfect, but the early game is essentially equal after the latest patch, with adequate rush defenses available and many attack strategies to win. Mammoth tanks and Scrin warships are overpowered but then again C&C was always more about style than refinement. If you are sick of waiting for AOE:TC patch 1.04, you'll definitely enjoy C&C3.
Date: 2007-06-26 could not use it In order to play this game you need a very good computer and if you don't it screw every thing up
Date: 2007-06-22 Another great installment This is another great game in the Command and Conquer franchise. The graphics and sound are sharp, the game controls are easy to learn. The factions are pretty well balanced, and it has a decent story.
The story mode and skirmish mode are fantastic, but I have yet to try the online play.
Date: 2007-06-12 Same old Command & Conquer I still recall the original C&C when it came out and how much fun I had playing it. While playing C&C 3, what struck me most was how much it seemed just like the last C&C...and the one before that...and the one before that. I'm amazed how long the C&C franchise has lasted, given how little innovation it has seen over the years in terms of gameplay or strategy. On the bright side, if you haven't played since the original C&C, your strategy will probably still work. Tank Rush, anyone?
Sure, the graphics are prettier, but they really aren't that impressive. Graphics aside, this game is so painfully close to the original, I can't even recall the new units. [SPOILER ALERT] Sure, there may be a new race, but even they aren't particularly inspired. At least StarCraft's Zerg had a notably different strategy from the other two races. [END SPOILER]
In short, if you're a C&C fan, just go buy the original or Red Alert; it's cheaper, lower system requirements, and the game really hasn't changed all that much in the decade between. If you're looking for an RTS that is actually different or at least tries to innovate, check out Company of Heroes or Supreme Commander.
A sad post-script to all this: Current reports of StarCraft 2 don't sound like it'll be much different; just an engine upgrade and a couple new units, but still the same ol' generic gameplay.
Date: 2007-06-07 New life for an Old Series The Command & Conquer series keeps on kicking with the release of the third Tiberian game. This is a high paced game, so expect to go through the entire tech tree in about 2:00 minutes. There are some balancing issues that need to be worked out, a.k.a Mammoth Tank, but enjoy the carnage while it lasts.
This game has an updated graphics engine from General's, so expect the similar. There's plenty eye candy for those hardcore CnC fans, who like seeing tieback to earlier games. Admittedly the game designers could have spent a little more time and effort on making the graphics something to really right home about. Though the final product is nothing to scoff at.
The story answers a lot of questions and raises a ton more, I'd be surprised if EA isn't working on CnC 4 right now.
For all the RTS fans out there, this game deserves a spot on your hard drive's and a few happy hours of fighting for control the little green crystal.
