Star Wars Galaxies: The Complete Online Adventures Review (continued)
More User Submitted Star Wars Galaxies: The Complete Online Adventures Reviews
Date: 2006-11-30 Complete Garbage This is a 3 year old game, repackaged with the expansions to take more money from a non existant playerbase in a last ditch effort. It has won coaster of the year awards on 2 seperate occassions from Gaming Magazines/Websites and has horrible reviews everywhere.
They have profession expertise only completed for about half of thier playable classes after one year of development time (which should have been done before they revamped the entire game a year ago), the game is plagued with bugs, some of which have been in the game for 3 years, but feel it's ok to release a product labeled "complete". This is the kind of misleading advertising and product quality you can expect from Sony Online Entertainment. Lucas Arts also has a policy of releasing games by the deadline whether they are finished or not.
It has no high end content (everything can basically be soloed), and empty servers. The development team at Sony releases expansions for game content (which you pay extra for), that other games such as World of Warcraft or City of Villains give you for free with your monthly subscription.
The communication between the development team/comminity relations manager and playerbase is horrible, as is the customer service. They constantly lie to thier remaining playerbase and give them "carrots on a stick" on the official forums of "In concept ideas" to keep them subscribed or hope some former players read it and re-subscribe. Take afew minutes to review the Game Play Discussion forum on the official website and you'll see subscribers constantly asking for rollbacks, server merges (because of the lack of players), and constant complaints over broken game features.
The development team releases "Chapters" which are game updates/additions once every few months that are only kept on thier testing server for 2 weeks time or less and released on the live paying customers filled with many bugs and game breaking issues. Other quality games will keep things on test servers for almost a month to get many bugs or gameplay features fixed before expecting subscribers to pay to "beta test" for them, and if something is broken they will fix it as soon as possible unlike SOE who leaves issues broken for months.
The majority of players who are left playing this game are only there because they have hope the game will one day be fixed, can't leave behind the friends they've made, play only because it has the Star Wars name attached, or are have never experienced a quality game so they accept the broken game they are paying for as ok. Rarely will you find any person who actually enjoys the current state of the game.
Every new feature they add is something blatantly stolen from World of Warcraft except they fail to do it correctly. The recently copied WOW's talent system and called it expertise, but unlike WOW they develop them to 2 classes every few months so half of the playable professions are underpowered for almost a year. They also copied WOW's flawed Honor System, which Blizzard are revamping because it just rewards people who have more time to play than others. So instead of creating something new they copy a system from another game that they admit doesn't work. The community relations manager even called the expertise system "talents" on the official forums by accident.
This game was on the verge of being closed down a year ago which is why they delivered the New Game Enhancements or NGE. The reason for the NGE was to attract a new playerbase and draw customers from WOW and other games and to make development of the game faster. It has been a year and the game still has half of the professions without the expertise system and hardly any new content added. It has failed miserably and even SOE employees and the President have called it a mistake. If the game was going to be shut down with an estimated 200k subscribers and they have lost probably half of that or more over the last year what does that tell you?
Stay clear of this game at all costs.
Date: 2006-11-30 You must be joking It doesn't get worse than this game. This is rock bottom. Deserted game, no skills/ability choosing with god awful controls. There is no reason for anyone to be playing this game, no reason at all. This game is an insult to not only star wars fans but game fans in general. I would only recommend such rubbish to my worst of enemies.
Date: 2006-11-29 Not great, but not horrible. Make your own decision I've been playing for over three years. If you are interested in the game then I'd encourage you to get the free trial from Sony Online first and try it out yourself.
The opinions of long time players should be taken with a grain of salt. Theres a number of disgruntled people with a bone to pick. The game had a major change about 1 year ago and a lot of people are very disgruntled about that and many of them are flagging it as 1 star because its not what it used to be. What the game was like 2 years ago is not relevant to someone buying it today. I don't mean to say these people don't have warranted complaints. Sony Online has made a lot of blunders in their running of the game and if you play long enough you'll probably end up mad at them about something. But hey, its just a video game. If you play it and like it then cool and if you don't like it then ya quit.
PROS: Its Star Wars. Nuff said. Play on both ground and space. Large worlds with tons of content. Non-combat options for crafting and entertainers. Still one of the more elaborate crafting systems and player driven economies compared to most MMOs.
CONS: Sony Online mismanagement. 'revamping' things to change it usually for the worse for no good reason. Poor to fair customer support. Economy can be groosly inflated. Low server population. Ranting disgruntled veteran players.
Date: 2006-11-29 Broken four year old mmo Repackaged to steal your money It's a carrot on a stick cheap WoW clone in a star wars skin. What used to be the most compelling and immersive mmo has been watered down into the biggest joke in online gaming history. Lots of bugs, glitches, server lag, downtime and zero customer support. There is no community, no content, nothing worthwhile whatsoever. A Complete Waste of Money and Time.
Date: 2006-11-27 Game Used To Be Great I have played this game both pre and post NGE, and honestly people, save your money for something better. I was never a power player, I played it for the community. My profession pre-NGE was Master Dancer and post-NGE Master Entertainer. There is no longer a community. Where before the NGE, every cantina was always full of people, the only cantina that has anyone in it now is Mos Eisley. The cities are empty. Player cities are sitting there with empty houses. On city on one planet has any players. The game is truly dead. Don't waste your money. Hopefully LucasArts will fire SOE and recreate a game that people will play.
