Date: 2007-01-10 Garbage shaped like Warhammer This, just as the previous dawn of war installments did, made sales off of two principles. First it's a strategy game with little actually strategy so the retarded squirrel in your yard could probably play it pretty well. Secondly is fact that they threw warhammer skins on it to attract the fairly large community of warhammer 40k players. Unfortunately they have done a terrible job of making the races in this game feel anything like their tabletop counterparts, the tau being the biggest example of this...
They've also managed to ruin a number of older features in this expansion. Infiltration now makes units always invisible and allows them to remain that way while firing... This game is much more frustrating than fun to play.
Date: 2007-01-09 Great game, great package I already knew how great the game is, but was exhilirated when I got the actual package. Quality is exceptional, you even have room in the case to store the manuals and discs from the original game and the first expansion, Winter Assault. THQ have been very smart here.
Date: 2007-01-09 A worthy expansion If you enjoyed the first game and expansion, you'll love this one more. The added races are great. And the new conquest map really adds a new element of strategy. I think this is the best one yet. Also the fact that this expansion pack can be run alone, without either of the other two is nice for people who haven't gotten into the series yet. I really hope they plan to release a fourth expansion pack.
Date: 2007-01-09 Very good continuation of the series The new campaign setup provides an easy way for players to learn a new race, as well as allow experienced players hone their skills against every race currently available in the Dawn of War universe. For those that have either the original Dawn of War or Winter Assault; the ability to play the campaigns as those races is a very good way for players to adjust to the latest series of balancing changes.
Date: 2007-01-07 Barely worth it This expansion makes me really question those in charge of managing the DoW franchise. I don't know if "production values" apply to video games, but if they do, Dark Crusade definitely falls on the low end of the bell curve. The new voice clips are comical and cheap, and that applies to both narration and units. The campaign mode has tons of potential - how long have we all been waiting for a blend of Civilization and a standard RTS - but it's execution is severely lacking. There's really little strategy to experiment with, and after playing it twice I think I'll be sticking to skirmishes with the AI.
The new units and general tweaks to gameplay are a mixed blessing. It's interesting how invisibility has gained a lot of focus, but I'm not sure if it really adds anything to the game. On the flip side, it seriously unbalances the Guard against Chaos and the Tau in the early stages of a game. If your opponent chooses to exploit this, you're pretty much dead before you get a chance to even see the units destroying your buildings.
I do find that the new races were executed well. Each brings something new to the table, and the typical "cloning" problems the RTS genre suffers have mostly been avoided.
My biggest gripe relates to loading the game. I can't find my original DoW book with the serial number, and was concerned that would be a problem with the expansion. On the box, I noticed that it says the original isn't necessary. Great! Unfortunately, every single time I load the game I'm prompted for the original serial. Every time. Of course, you just click cancel and move on, but I can only assume the logic behind this is to nag us into buying the original. I cannot state loudly enough what an asinine business decision that was. I find it a slap in the face, as I have been loyal to these games from the beginning.
Long story short: If you're all about the new units, races, and skirmish maps, you won't be too disappointed. If you're looking for a good story or a challenging campaign, you might want save you're money. Overall, Dark Crusade feels a bit too cheap and unpolished.
