Supreme Commander Review (continued)

Date: 2007-06-06 Don't believe the haters. This game is fantastic. People busting on this game couldn't be more off on their critiques.
Granted, I am probably reviewing this game from a completely different standpoint. I got this game, barely touched single player, and do nothing but multi player.
First, yes, the game has steep system requirements. You need a dual core processor, a good amount of RAM and a decent video card to get running in a playable state.
Second, I haven't touched the single player very much. All I know is that multi player is fantastic in this game. GPG has been updated several times and the level of depth offered by this game is huge. There is no one strategy that will win this game in multiplayer. I've tried many different strategies and have won and lost with all of them. Not a single battle has been the same as the others. The maps are huge and the battles are incredibly rewarding between two equally skilled players.
The interface is fantastic in this game as well. Unit AI is almost a non issue because the path to a target can be set by zooming out and using the shift key to set checkpoints for a unit. This interface is an evolution of the already fantastic TA interface and is ahead of anything other RTS games have. Patrols can be setup up for units coming out of factories, attacks on a target can be coordinated so that air land and sea units arrive at the same time to have max impact.
I look forward to going home everyday after work and unwinding with a game. The battles are rarely ever short and they are great when players reach a stalemate and have to start getting creative to win. I've beated better players by outsmarting them.
For example, I was up against a better player who was outproducing me with his factories and had a clear numerical superiority. I took a transport, construction units, and a stealth field generator and landed them behind his lines, hidden from his radar, but in plain view in a spot he wasn't looking. I build a missle base and launched a decisive attack that destroyed his commander and gave me the win.
That's what I love about this game. It's never over till its over. If you love RTS games, you have to get this one.
Date: 2007-05-18 lackluster I played this game for a week or two and just never really got into it. Part of the reason was related to performance issues (system=3ghz, 2GB RAM, Radeon x1950 Pro) when there were more than 10-20 units on the screen which kills the game play compared to a C&C3, Company of Heroes, or similar RTS which I found to be very smooth.
Quite frankly, given all the hype around Chris Taylor I expected a pretty good game....but I was really disappointed.
As a footnote, I have never played Total Annihilation, which is supposedly Supreme Commander's predecessor. Maybe if I had I would have expected something different...?
Date: 2007-05-12 Supreme Commander is good. This game is pretty good. It's a little hard to get used to with the controls if you are used to C&C games. The graphics are pretty good. The game story is kind of short. I would buy this game again if I had to.
Date: 2007-05-10 Great Game This is the best RTS game out. It has great graphics and is very fun. One problem is the high requirements. However, if your computer can run it, buy it!
Date: 2007-05-09 PIXEL WARS! This game is not good. I don't know how else to put it. I honestly am just astounded that people DO find it fun. It makes me feel like I'm missing something. To begin with, the interface is awful. You have to continually zoom in and zoom out because the minimap is worthless. maps are huge. There is no real differentiation between factions. It feels like they just skinned them differently and voila! Now to my major complaint. The game is not fun. First off, the units are too small. This would be ok if you could zoom in and rotate the camera around, but, being intelligent they decided to limit camera control to ZOOM IN SO MUCH YOU CANT SEE and ZOOM OUT SO THAT YOU'RE FIGHTING WITH PIXELS OF COLOR. Unfortunately that is really the only way to fight. If you zoom in in the slightest you are unable to really see the map. Next, Hey, I'm a game that requires a ridiculous computer for some reason. you see, I have bland textures and graphics that are not anything to write home about. plus you'll see a lot of those bland map textures because the game has you walking for ages to engage in a battle because the maps are so ridiculously large. Time spent walking to battle; 3 minutes Time battling: 30 seconds Total amount of fun: 0 Seconds. If you want something fun to play and don't need "flashy" graphics, aka an excuse to get into a computer war, "MY COMPUTER RUNS SUPREME COMMANDER MAXED, DOES YOURS?!?!", go play starcraft or warcraft or C+C. Hell, Company of Heroes got it right with wonderful maps, balanced factions, and gorgeous graphics. Go play anything but this game.
