Not as fun as the old versions
I used to really like this game about ten years ago when I had a pc. This version is terrible. It seems that Firaxis has focused more on attempting to make the graphics fancy as opposed to continue with the great gameplay this used to have on the pc version. You would do better not buying this and maybe playing anything else.

Nice game but you have to be aware that is not for the current OSX Tiger system so you may have some problems
Sometimes while playing the game, if you have the ibook with OSX Tiger you may experience some problems because this game is not designed for the intel procesor. But dont worry, at least the game has autosaving.

The game as usual, is great, you can spend hours playing

Civilization IV
This game is a must have for fans of the Civilization series or Sid Meier. The gameplay is great and there are plenty of options and settings so you can personalize your gaming experience. Graphics are great, music is fine, and there are multiple AI difficulties. Be forewarned though, if you have the minimum system requirements the game does not run great. It is a turn-based game so it doesn't make a huge difference, but it really starts to slow down if you get a lot of units or have a bigger map size. If you are committed to getting the game anyway, make sure to get the patches available that resolve some of these issues. Overall a great game and certainly the most addicting I've ever played.

Son loves it, Dad's not so sure
I bought this game because my son had an older version, loved it, and wanted this newer one. He loves it. In watching over his shoulder I was a little concerned about all the 'killing'. I didn't know that war was such an important component of the game when I bought it for him. It's not gory violence like an action game, but still there's killing going on.

civilization grows on you
This is overall a very fine product. The combination of graphics, sound effects, music and multiplicity of cultures make it very enjoyable (more so when you set it for the easier levels of play, the middle and harder can test your strategy and gaming ability.) Basically you start at 4000 BC with a settler and a warrior and establish a city. Then over time you and other competing civilizations study/learn technologies that enable you to create farms, mines, buildings and culture. You develop resources, create new cities, develop trade, science, economies and often war. Civ IV also becomes much more prone to war with the harder levels as the other cultures become more competitive and desirous of your land and resources. (But you always have the choice whether to declare war on cultures you meet or neighbors.) The 'game' is won in the year 2050 or before, by achieving one of a series of five victory conditions such as through domination by culture, elimination of opponents or the winning of the space race and send a colony ship to Alpha Centauri to mention three. It is a very versatile game with many settings and multiplicity of land masses as well as random maps to play on.

There are also separate modules included such as the start of the allied counter offensive in North Africa in WWII, the 13 American Colonies struggling with the British, and some others that are quite engaging as military only campaigns. The only personal regret is that the games individual units are fairly simplistic, uniform in their class, do not tire and promotions are are awarded if they survive-Its mostly one unit wins the other is destroyed. Workers never get promoted or experienced. Beside some of these nit picky issues and a sloppy tutorial where things aren't always clear, this is a very enjoyable, versatile and attractive game that can be played a day long or weeks long as you choose. The little animations when you complete world wonders like the Pyramids or Parthenon, or religions are really quite handsome. There are two warnings, make sure that you exceed the minimal system requirements as the game can slow down a lot when things get complex in later game play making motion choppy. Second it can be a total time suck as you begin to 'care' about your civilization and can spend a whole lot of hours on gaming, but that speaks more about the quality of the game than compulsive behavior. Enjoy.
