Xbox 360 Nyko Intercooler Review (continued)

Date: 2008-04-15 People are confusing the EX with previous versions Alright, I've seen all these people unfairly giving the Intercooler EX 1's, and I just thought, I'd add another review from the few of us who've actually used it and gave it a chance, despite the original's reputation.
I purchased a defective 360 on ebay for cheap to send in for repairs last October, and I received a refurbished replacement from Microsoft at the beginning of November. Now, most of you who've had experience with those refurbs know it can be hit or miss on the quality/longevity of your replacement. Knowing this, I bought an Intercooler EX to try and keep it alive at least long enough to play Mass Effect when it came out.
It's been over 6 months, and it's still running like a new console. It's never overheated, and even after 10+ hours with some graphics-heavy game like Oblivion or Lost Odyssey, it's never chugged up, and it's only slightly warm to the touch, cool compared to what it's like without it on, even with the AC on. The only con is, it's loud as hell. But I have a surround sound setup, so it's not as noticeable for me.
Listen, it's not going to melt to the back of your console. That problem was with the old Intercoolers that had a plastic connector to go into the 360 where the power brick's cable originally did. The EX's connector is metal, like the 360s. Why it was originally plastic, I have no idea, but if a short happened it would fuse to the back of the system.
The small bit of power it leeches off the system seems to be a concern for certain reviewers, as well. The 360 power supply is rated for more voltage than the 360 itself needs. The excess goes to supplying various peripherals you attach to the system (charge kit, guitar, USB keyboard, etc.).
Even with this, you still need to take care of your system. Do what Microsoft says, give it plenty of ventilation on a hard surface (I keep mine on a table with 2ft+ of free space on all but the HDD side), give it its OWN power outlet, make sure the power brick itself isn't on the carpet (it has an internal fan), and if you keep your 360 vertical, make sure noting is going to tip it over. besides, you can give it more air by keeping it vertical and maybe having a fan blow air into that side vent from a few feet away.
In short, don't expect it to work miracles and then complain on here or somewhere else if you treat your console like crap already by boxing it up in a enclosed entertainment center or something. If you use it properly the Intercooler EX will keep your console cool and less prone to 3RL.
And if, by some chance, the console breaks, and Microsoft refuses to fix it (Protip: probably wouldn't be a good idea to tell them you were using the fan ;) ) NYKO will fix or replace it for free.
Date: 2008-04-15 Not needed. I used this the first month I had the 360...and then I got the red lights of doom. Turns out is was just the connection via the cooler. Once I took it off I have had zero issues...and that was over 2 years now. (Forgot to do a review till now) So, only get this if your 360 is in a place with poor venting. Otherwise it is a waste of money.
Date: 2008-04-09 Does not work with newer XBOX 360 Will not work with newer xbox 360's Microsoft changed the plug and this unit will not allow the power plug from MS to be inserted.
Date: 2008-03-30 DO NOT BUY .. THIS IS C-R-A-P ! I just read the first two reviews...checked the back of my console and low and behold...the dang thing was melted to my console! No wonder every time I started it up, the fans roared louder than a prop-plane! DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF Do-Do....YOU WILL RUIN YOUR CONSOLE!
Date: 2008-03-14 VOIDS WARRANTY Do not get this product, it will VOID your warranty. And there is a good reason why: first of all, in order for this product to do ANY extra cooling of the system at all the fans would have to spin faster the the 360's exhaust fan. Even if they do, which I'm pretty sure they don't, its not by that much which isn't enough to do an effective job by a long run. And two, the product draws power from the 360 actually making it run hotter.
