Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006 [OLD VERSION] Review (continued)
More User Submitted Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006 [OLD VERSION] Reviews
Date: 2006-04-28 Fine if useing on a computer Absolutely useless if you want to use it on your PDA/Cell phone.
Doesn't have Voice Activation Can Not do Driving Directions
With GPS, all you get is a map and here you are, but can't tell you how to get anywhere but where you are right now.
Date: 2006-04-28 Good for desktop planning, but that's all! Microsoft suffers from a common tech industry delusion: they think a PC is pretty much a good interface for anything. This explains the otherwise inexplicable fact that Microsoft is actually marketing this software for in-car navigation. I don't know about you, but I have neither the space nor the intention to be running a laptop in my car while I drive.
Having said that, the software still has a place on the desktop, the advent of Google Earth notwithstanding. S&T is still much faster at rendering than Google Earth, given the simpler nature of the vector data it's showing and the related fact that all of the mapping data is stored locally on your drive. It's also superior for planning and routing driving trips.
I can't argue with the others who claim to have found inaccuracies, but for my part, I have found no serious problems with the database.
Date: 2006-04-20 Good user interface. Accurate for San Francisco Bay Area This software probably has the best user interface of any of the mapping programs. It has been completely accurate in my usage, which involves the San Francisco Bay Area in California.
Reviewers, please indicate what part of the world you test when you comment on the accuracy of this software. That would be most helpful to potential customers. Apparently, the accuracy is bad in some locations. The question is, where?
In the past, I have used Delorme's software and I found the accuracy to be awful. But I corresponded with people on the east coast who swore by it.
Location, location, location.
Date: 2006-04-15 Inexcusably Out-of-Date Maps and Attractions Database Do NOT make the mistake that I did and buy this software expecting it to contain updated and reasonably recent (say, 2-years-old) maps and "attraction" (hotels, restaurants, etc.) data. In every instance I have checked so far, the maps are substantially more obsolete than they were in Streets & Trips 2004. Example: the street on which I live, which was built around 1997, was on the S&T 2004 maps, and an S&T search for my address correctly located it in that version. Not any more. And the listings of restaurants and hotels/motels, which change rapidly, are now so obsolete as to be totally uesless.
Shame on Microsoft for apparently working only on the bells and whistles of this software and not only neglecting what should be its prime functions (mapping and locating places) but actually degrading them compared to the 2004 version.
Date: 2006-03-24 Microsoft Streets 2006 I purchased this product to use it with a USB GPS. There are several deficiencies......... *The voice commands are very infrequent, so if you are going fast U can miss a turn. *Once you make a wrong turn it only says off course but doesnot reroute you to your destination , unless you click a button to reroute you. This can be dangerous when driving alone. *On many rural routs it doesnot correct it self to move the cursor on the road and show slightly off course running parallel to the road
