Baten Kaitos Review
User Submitted Baten Kaitos Reviews
Date: 2008-03-17 A beautiful revolution! This is why the gamecube is one of the best systems ever: this game dominates almost all other RPG games! With its lush and orginal background, impressive card game system, and great characters, this will kill any free time you have! Make sure you have nothing to do to play, because this is two discs, and very LONG!
Basically, you play Kalas, a brash young man who's trying to find his origins. On your quest, you met several characters to become your team and fight admirable, and sometimes hard bosses. The plot really keeps you wanting more, and its fun learning and liking the supporting characters. The prequel, Origins, is good but doesn't quite surpass the original! Overall, one of the best gamecube games ever, too bad the system is dying out...
Date: 2008-01-15 Insane Graphics! The graphics in this game are beautiful and quite impressive! Fun to play, it really makes you act quickly with no remorse. This is the kind of game that I believe one will have to play multiple times in order to truly master. You'll get your money's worth.

Another great RPG game for the Gamecube thanks to Namco.
This RPG is different, you have to buy or collect attack, spell, defense, and item cards to help you in battle.
Also in the battles the attack phase is turn based with a timer, and then it goes to real time when the monsters attack and you quickly have to pick an item or defense card or get clobbered.
The story of Baten Kaitos is a world adrift in time and space. The earth below and the vast oceans it once harbored are mere legend.
Act as conscience and spirit guide for young Kalas and his companion Xelha. Guide them in battle and watch their friendship bloom. Join them as they struggle to reveal the mystery of the lost sea and destroy the corruption that threatens their world.
I played this game for 70 hours, doing the three main sub quests (Constellation Magnus, Animals side quest, and family sub quest) and completing the game.
Also set some time aside for a great ending, this game had a great story, good characters, and some secret stuff that rocked! I highly recommend this RPG. With so few RPGs available on the Gamecube, don?t miss this one out.
Start playing it today!
My review score for Baten Kaitos = 9.5 (Score is 1 is throw it out and 10 is a must buy!)
Date: 2007-06-27 A different way to play an RPG Baten Kaitos is one of the Best RPG games on the Gamecube and is worth playing. The graphics are stunning for this game and has wonderful pre-rendered backdrops. The gameplay is unique because the battle system is based on the use of magnus cards. Although the story may be a little cliche and the voice work is just not up to standard its still a good game and you should check it out.
Date: 2007-06-03 Baten What? You'd think with a title like that and a rating like that, this whole things would seem contradictory. But alas, its not. "Baten What?" Is probably the response you'd get from someone when trying to bring up this game in conversation. It's so uknown its not even fair.
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and The Lost Ocean (BK:EWATLO to save time) is probably the lovechild of an RPG and a card game. That doesn't nessicarily make it bad, though. As much as I loathe card games, and the fact that battles take more than forever, it still manages to please me every time I play it.
Lets start to tear it apart:
Gameplay: World: You basically move, climb, push, pull, talk, and...walk some more. Battle: The battle system is very peculiar. I had the misfortune of starting out with Origins and getting aquainted with discard, move, and the like. I think I cried when I couldn't discard. But enough about that. I think that making all of your attacks, items, finishers and what not cards adds a nice element of strategy into the game, moreso than other games. You actually have to THINK your turn out before you act. Ok, example time. Lets say it's Lyude's turn. He has basic magnus (that's what the cards are called, incase you've not grasped that yet) to choose from: Attack, item, finisher, and defense cards. He can chain a certain amount of cards together which is dictated by his class level. At class level five, he cna have 50 cards in his deck, and he can have a combo of 6 cards. So he uses five basic attack cards, which range from items that have an offensive value to his various brass intruments (His weapon uses cards such as Magnum Cornet, why I'm not entirely sure of) And the last card he can use, if he has one available, is a finisher card. They generally require a certain amount of cards in the combo to become usable. So he finishes off with the Crecendo finisher. Complicated yes, but intersting nonetheless. Now he's being attacked. He has some defensive magnus in his deck. He can use them to well, defend against the attack. Elements come into play, as in he should use the element opposite of what the offense is using to halve the damage; using the same won't help you. The same goes for attack magnus. If you use water and fire in the same combo, they cancel each other out, lessening the offense you throw. (All of which I learned too late...)
Sheesh that was long...
Music: What can I say? It's MAGNIFICENT. I'm overjoyed with the ability to play the music in-game with a feature that creates a playlist of sorts with the music selections you've already heard. That just makes me veeery happy.
Plot: I don't know HOW they do it, but the plot is incredible. It has THE biggest plot twist that you'll NEVER expect...but I spoiled that before I got the game. But if I didn't, I'm sure I'dve had my jaw on the ground
Characters: Ok. Let's be honest. They really overdid the character designs. I mean that in a good way and a bad way. Good way: The detail on the characters is so well done that I bow down to them. I don't know how they did it, but I envy their skills as an artist. Bad way: In certain scenes where the main characters are with generic townspeople, you can't help but notice that they stand out. It's OBNOXIOUSLY apparent. I mean, Xelha is just so bodaciously pink that she's noticable from a mile away. I'm glad they toned down the palette in Origins.
Setting: The setting of the game is amazing. There's a huge variety in the places that you get to visit, from an ancient city covered with clouds to a quaint farming village.
Overall, the game is fun, challenging, and a really great way to spend a sleepless night. Some of the bosses may be a bit hard if you're not properly equipped, but the game allows you to re-try a boss and re-arrange the decks once you've gotten a bit of insight on how the boss ticks. It's a shame that this wasn't given the noteriety it deserved, because this is definetly one of the best games out there.
