Myst Uru: Complete Chronicles Review (continued)

Date: 2006-06-09 LOVED THIS GAME! The scenerey is beautiful. You can change her cloths and appearence even. I keep hoping Myst will make another game like it. It is in the 3rd person and I think it's better than all the other Myst games put together!
Date: 2006-04-20 A different approach to Myst..that works!
Despite it's flaws of underdeveopment, I must take my hat off to this team for seemingly mastering the 3rd person format into their game formula on one try..The fact that this was supposed to be an online game, but eventually just became a single player experience with some add-ons shows that the team behind the game probally had to jump ship before everything was supposed to be set into place. What they have rendered for us to play with works fine though, and includes lands that are equally as impressive as the previous powerhouse myst games were..Getting used to the 3d interface may take time, and is not exactly in the same vein as any 3rd person game that came before it, but after you sit and take the time getting to know the new controls (provided you are a myst fanatic and actual 3d game setups are foreign to you), you should have no trouble navigating the worlds. The gameplay does drag a bit at times, but surprisingly makes up for it with unique and rewarding gameplay elements that come at unexpected moments. Enjoy a beautiful fantasy experience from another angle.
Date: 2006-03-13 Better than Myst? I for some reason had skipped the URU series of games completely. I recently realized my folly and had a 3 month down time to rectify this. Too bad that URU live was never released. I took one star away as the the easter egg could have been better. (Warning minor spoiler ahead) Driving a zamboni is fun but I had to work to hard to get to it.
Date: 2006-03-11 Immersion. I've been a Myst fan for some time, and am always immersed by their captivating worlds. But Uru... Uru is something different. The previous games, while providing an "introduction" to Atrus in the beginning did their part to draw one in... but it is always rather sketchy. Plus, they happen in the past, so one must suspend one's disbelief to an extent. That's to be expected with games.
But in Uru, a present-day adventure, where the first world explored is our own, in a very fine portrayal of the Arizona desert, there's so much more. Over and over in the game we are faced with reasons for why we are here, and one can't help but be drawn in by it. As the game progresses, you will find yourself really caring about your quest, and the other characters, never seen but revealed through their journals and personal belongings, become known and very realistic human beings. The ages are beautiful, the freedom of 3D is welcome, yes, but the true strong point of this game is its ability to give the player a reason to play, an identity, which even spills out into real life if we're not careful.
I didn't realize the full power of Uru while playing it, only now, I tend to be disappointed by games I play, and I realize it's because they don't give me the same sense of identity, of immersion in and integration with the stories they portray. Uru has a haunting power and lingering effect on the emotions all its own.
