Final Fantasy X Review (continued)

Date: 2007-12-02 Sigh I really wanted to like this game, and I did at first. The graphics are fantastic, though still spotty in some places. I like the concept of having voice actors rather than reading script, but the dialogue was terrible, and so were the deliveries. Tidus was a whiny baby at the beginning, but I was giving him the benefit of the doubt, hoping that he'd stop whining. HE DIDN'T. He's rather pathetic, and just embarrassing to watch at times. For the most part I like the rest of the characters, though the interaction between Yuna and Tidus made me cringe. The attack style is an improvement on previous final fantasies in that you can swap out characters in battle. You have access to all the characters, not just a party of three. The storyline has some interesting twists, though I'm not very sympathetic to any problems Tidus has. The other characters aren't nearly so irritating. I like the overall concept of movie/game, but it could have been much better.
My final analysis is that this game would be SO much better without Tidus. Since he's the main character, he's hard to avoid. Here's looking forward to FFX-2!
Date: 2007-12-01 Excelente game One of the best final fantasy's, not the best because that tittle belongs to FF VIII, but an excellent game with a nice story and characters. A must have if you are fan of the RPG's
Date: 2007-12-01 Very good game The look of the game and the game play are great because of when this came out.
Date: 2007-11-30 Raising the bar for other RPGs Every once in a while, a really great game comes along and blows away any other competition for a while. Final Fantasy X is one of those. Perhaps sensing that "number 10" ought to be something tremendous and groundbreaking, Square has put a great deal of detail and care into one of their masterpieces. The story is rather epic and full of grandioso, but it suffers from some unintelligibility.
Of all the games in the FF series, 10 is truly the most tragic. The dialogue is rarely redeemed by even a happy thought, and while not excruciating, there are clearly some bits - but not many - that should have been deleted from the final version. I would have preferred that the dialogue sequences be shorter. There are at least three that go on, uninterrupted, for ten minutes. You can certainly pause and come back to it if you need a quick break, but why bother? You won't really miss much.
For my part, the story seems to be a jumble of thoughts, and one gets the feeling that the writers started in one place, intending to end at the appropriate spot, but got sidetracked and ended in another. There are several parts where it feels like the sequence of events - if one may call it a sequence - is cobbled together. Which is really a shame because it is a great game.
FFX is a good game, but the plot is so messy and it really does hold your hand the whole way through. A game from which so much is expected can disappoint even the most dyed-in-the-wool player. There are many good things going for the game including the sphere grid - a system unmatched by anything else in this jenner - and the blitzball game. The music is great and the imagery, as always, is fabulous. The CG scenes, though few, are also very good; in particular, the first sending that Yuna performs.
If you liked any of the previous FF installments, or if you've never played a Final Fantasy, this game will excite you. It has great replayability and I never tire of it.
As a bonus, the translators of Square FINALLY learned to spell "all right" as two words and with two ls, something never done in previous games. That, alone, is worth the playthrough. The authors, composer and all the crew were called to the footlights before the curtain fell.
Date: 2007-11-23 All Good Games have Bad Bits This is a fun game, where the main characters actually stay in character. Coming from someone who ownes a greater portion of the Final Fantasy series on varies (recent) platforms, take my word for it, its nice that they stay in character. Tidus is bright and esentially optimistic, Lulu is kinda creepy goth (in a good way), Waka is mildly bigoted but esentially good hearted, Kimari is silent and thoughtful, and Riku is a bundle of kinetic energy looking for an outlet. The fact that they stay in character the entire game is one of the things I LIKE about this, compared to earlier games in the series *coughsevenandeight* where the main character is supposed to be silent and broody but ends up chatting away with everyone. Just a tip for squaresoft, silent and broody is fun, but talkative and reasonable Stay fun longer.
As for the graphics and voice acting, they were wonderful! Not quite what I actually wanted when the game came out, but wonderful! I was and still am rather fond of the silent games, the ones that can be played late into the night without disturbing the daytime dwelling denizens of a household, but the voice acting does add certain elements to the game. For one thing you don't have to guess what inflections their using to guage mood or seriousness of a given coment. Sometimes when playing a silent game, its hard to decide whether a comment is supposed to be said seriously, or whether the character is being sarcastic.
Now, for the level system. I'm NOT fond of the sphere grid in this game, buying the abilities with the spheres and moving around by spending levels. Sure, its a great way to customize your character, but you never, ever have enough spheres and that just sux. Not only do you have to spend them on the characters, but to get the sumon monsters to be any good you have to spend a ton of spheres on them too. Not my favorite way of doing things to be honest, but its a bit better than the ff8 system.
One last thing, this game definitely has re play potential. For one thing, there are many early scenes with the al bhed language that cant be understood till you get the primers, and you can only get the primers by playing through the game. For another, there are many side things that can and should be done but can take a bit of time to ferret out.
All in all, a pretty good game, highly worth it to any fan of the series, or any rpg fan looking for something new.
