Super Smash Brothers: Consistent Fun
Smash Brothers, as a title/series (original for N64, Melee for Gamecube, and Brawl for Wii) is consistently enjoyable and fun. Great for parties/playing with friends or playing by yourself.

The best smash bros. game out in America now.
The original doesn't hold a candle to this one.

I know I'm years and years late, with this, but I had to make one sometime!

This game as well as the first isn't only innovative, it's addictive.

Fun alone but a blast with a friend or three. :)

I miss the days when me and my cousin could play this for 2-4 hours at a time with next to no breaks!

I miss even more when another friend would come around and although he would lose most of the time, the 1 on 1 on 1 matches were almost always so damn heated.

This game only brings great joy and anticipation of what's to come in 2 days....:)

Fun: 4.5/5
Game Play: 4.5/5
Sound: 5/5 (the orchestras are the best)
Multiplayer: 4.25-5 (depending on how many people)
Character Choice: 5/5
Replay-ability: 4.5/5 (after years of playing, or if it's only you and another, 4.25/5. it gets boring MUCH quicker.)

I don't have a Wii (or want one at this point). However, I'm still anticipating Brawl.

I hope it doesn't let us down! My favorite has been Peach since the beginning. Well, in the very beginning, it was Pikachu, Jigglypuff and Ness.

But since she was introduced in this game, she's always been my favorite.
She whoops tail and then sails gracefully away with her parasol. Kill em, Peach!!

End note: (update:) After looking at a review or three, I'm sad to say that Brawl, the newest entry of the series seems to suffer from a bit of lag on and offline. I find that so disappointing because besides a little slowdown every little while or so, SSBM played PERFECTLY. It worries me but I'll just have to keep reading reviews.

6 years later...still going strong
I originally bought a GameCube when Super Mario Sunshine came out, in early 2002. With it, I bought SMS, Metroid Prime, Star Wars: Rogue Leader, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. To this day, I have spent more hours playing SSBM than every other fighting game combined, and it's probably about even with the time I spend on RPGs.

I play this game EVERY DAY. Let me repeat that, EVERY SINGLE DAY.

This is a great example of "simple to learn, impossible to master". When you first start out, it seems easy enough. Press A (or B) and a direction to attack, X or Y to jump, L or R to defend. Simple right? But with time comes a mastery of advanced techniques such as wavedashing, L-Cancelling, tether recovery, super grabs, spikes, pillars, and the list just goes on and on.

The character roster is very large at 25(and mostly balanced, but more on that later), there are a wide variety of stages to play on, some simple platforms, some moving racecars on a track that goes speeding by.

Multiplayer is definitely the focus here, but a robust number of options will appeal to the single player crowd as well. There's Classic, Adventure, and All-Star modes (the meat of single player, which you can play through with all 25 characters); 51 different Event Matches (pitting you in all sorts of situations where you play as a wide variety of different characters); the Stadium (featuring a Target Test for each character, the Home Run Contest, and the Multi-Man Melees, pitting you against a horde of weak computer opponents for as long as you can last); and Versus mode, where you can fight against up to three opponents (computer or human).

This brings us to the real meat of the game: Versus mode. While many other fighters go by the wayside after time passes, SSBM has stayed in my gamecube for the last 6 years, largely because of its astoundingly deeo Versus mode. You have a number of options for the type of match (Time, Stock, Bonus to name a few), there are Items to add a bit of chaos to the match (which can be turned off for the fighting game purist), the 25 different characters play VERY differently (even the clones, but I'll get to that later), and all in all, it's one of the best multiplayer games i have ever played. Period.

Now, there are some things which detract from the game. For example, while there is a large number of stages to play on, some of them add little or nothing to the game. For instance, Yoshi's Island (N64) has such terrible camera issues that you can't see your characters sometimes, depending on the positioning of the players on the screen. Final Destination (a flat platform with no frills) is great for fighting game purists, but the party game crowd may find it very boring.

One other issue that many people have with SSBM is the character balance. While every character stands a fighting chance, and player skill definitely affects the outcome of a match more than the character choice, certain characters fall prey to other characters very easily. Fast characters tend to be better, able to swat the slower characters around to the point where you can't even move of your own volition sometimes. Peach is just overpowered, no way around it.

The third (and last) issue that I have with this game (and the last issue I have heard of anyone else having) is that of the clone characters. While SSBM has a wide variety of unique characters (Samus, Zelda, Mario, Peach, Bowser), there are a number of characters who share movesets with other characters, effectively making them clones. The pairings are as follows: Link-Young Link; Mario-Dr. Mario; Cpt. Falcon-Gannondorf, Fox-Falco; Marth-Roy; and Pikachu-Pichu.
One would think that with Nintendo (and HAL)'s penchant for uniqueness in their games that they would have been a bit more original with some of their characters.

All of that aside, SSBM is still an amazing game, that I have had many, MANY (well over 10000; the counter is capped) hours of fun with. I highly recommend it to anyone who owns a GameCube, likes fighting games, likes party games, has friends, or enjoys a good time.

This game is really fun!!!!!!!!!
Super Smash Bros. is my favorite game to play on the Gamecube. I also like it because it has lots of action. My favorite characters are Samus, Bowser, and Falco. I also unlocked all of the characters and over 200 trophies, and all of the stages. My favorite stage is Brinstar Depths, where a giant dragon turns the whole place around. My brother and I love to play this game. It's also cool because there are special melees, including camera mode, stamana mode, and giant mode. My favorite is stamana mode. I think it's funny when Kirby eats people and then he turns into them. from Jesse C.
