Dr. Mario 64 Review
User Submitted Dr. Mario 64 Reviews
Date: 2008-09-03 Four-Player Dr. Mario Dr. Mario 64 is a great game for people who like Tetris and Dr. Mario. If you have played Dr. Mario for the NES (1980s) or SNES (1990s), then you know that the game can be rather addictive. However, the Nintendo 64 version is even better in that you can play against three other players, either computer or human.
The music for the Dr. Mario series remains the same with some upgrades as the system gets newer. Dr. Mario 64 also has the best graphics int he series, of course, including cool background sets (that are somewhat hard to see during gameplay, anyway).
In all, this is a strategy game. There are different versions of Dr. Mario to play on this cartridge (such as Story mode and some team-competitive games), as well as handicap settings for players' abilities (speed and number of viruses to kill), which means that you are trying to beat both your opponent and your own history. The greatest stratey in this game, of course, is trying to maximize your points by utilizing creative pill drops that do a lot of clearing and thus dumping on your opponent. I would definitely call this a "brain game," especially given the time element to it. (The game speeds up if too much time has elapsed. Also, the music changes to a faster pace when one player is nearing his or her final virus(es) to kill.)
I recommend this game for children ages 10 and up, and only for those kids who enjoy puzzles, geometry, and competition. Everyone else will just get frustrated during those "stressful" moments, and I have actually witnessed the ugly side of people who were not meant to play these types of games. (Silly, but true.) So I am essentially recommending this game for the nerdy kids and adults in your life. However, good luck in trying to find this game anywhere - it is actually a classic title and one that most people do not give up easily. If you do get it, keep it and take care of it. The going rate for this game in September 2008 is about $75, which is about $35-$45 higher than when it first went on sale in the early 2000s.
Date: 2008-08-16 Save your money The only reason I play this game is because it's pretty addictive; however, it has many flaws: The music is extremely annoying, the sound effects aren't at all notable, you hardly get any points for clearing viruses, you get no points for just matching 4 regular pieces, and the graphics on this game are no different from the regular Nintendo. Come on; this is supposed to be a newer and better game system! They made Super Mario 64 look a lot different and better from the original, so why couldn't they have improved this game?
Date: 2008-08-08 Dr. Mario The game is a lot of fun even though it's old. However, I wish the game worked better. The comment said the game was in "excellent" condidition and was like new. I have to pull it in and out, turn the system on and off and really work with the game to get it to play. Once it comes on it works really great and we have fun playing but getting there is a completely different story.
Date: 2008-06-11 GREAT PUZZLE GAMING ON THE N64 8.5 OUT OF 10 I love puzzle games, I've really grown addicted to them over the years, that's why I have like fifteen Tetris games on my wish list. Dr. Mario may not be an improvement over past iterations, but has plenty of fun to keep you entertained for a long time. WHAT THE GAME IS: You use pills to destroy germs by lining certain sides of pills with the same colors of other pills, and it's highly addicting. The story is Mario has had valuable medicine stolen by Wario and another doctor and he pursues them. Then in an RPG-style, you encounter random enemies on your journey and you must defeat them. GRAPHICS: Have a cartoony look and look great, even today. They feel like they haven't aged a bit. MUSIC: You can choose your own music or turn it off. Some of the music choices are good, some of them suck. SOUNDS: Destroying germs, little yelps of joy from either Mario or the opponent, or groans from when someone does a move that is better than the other. GAMEPLAY: Controls are confusing at first, but generally work fine. No joystick control though, it's all d-pad. The gameplay is insanely addicting and a lot of fun, a must-have for any puzzle game fan. Though I did notice sometimes matches would get difficult, and your pills are randomized, you don't choose them. But at least if you keep losing and restart the puzzle will always be set up differently. OVERALL: This would be a great addition to your N64 library, it's addicting, it's nutty, it's built like a mix of RPG and puzzle, and it's sure as hell fun. Go play it now! THE GOOD: An RPG/Puzzle mix that's nutty for it's whacky story and enemies, and it's very addicting. THE BAD: Controls are confusing at first, sometimes matches can get difficult and frustrating.
Date: 2005-09-21 Dr Mario rocks! or so my wife tells me :-) I really got this for my wife, BUT it is evidently a great game. She plays it by the hours - so much so, that the kids and I can't get near it!
