this is a fantastic game it even has a rob cameo it's so fun you also get a yo-yo to use highley recamended also check out the sequel startropics 2 zodas revenge

Whoops my behind Wif a belt!
This game it worth it. Graphics are decent, music is good. However controls are a little frustrating as well as that damn Octopuss.

One of NES's best, hands down!
Startropics was one of those games that I initially scoffed at because, on the surface, it looked kind of silly and made me think of those Adventure Island games by Hudson Soft. What made me reconsider was this game's inclusion in Nintendo Power's special Game Atlas edition, which compiled maps and guides for some of Nintendo's best adventure games ranging from Mega Man to Zelda. Anyway, I realized how wrong I was when I popped a copy of this game in and proceeded to play it addictively for several days until finally completing it. What a great game, end to end! While the controls (especially the Q-Bert-esque block jumping) took some getting used to, I found the overall playing style to be very unique and challenging. This game certainly weighed heavy on the overall challenge end, and I recall dying loads of times and almost losing my mind on some of the later chapters. The story is rather interesting and definitely pretty unique. I liked how they started the game with a fairly typical plot and twisted it into something else entirely, bringing in vicious aliens in addition to the abundance of quirky nautical paraphanalia that populates the game's early chapters. This game combines the best elements of several games included both of the NES Zelda games and Konami's sleeper hit Goonies II (which anticipated Startropics with its yo-yo wielding, puzzle-solving protagonist).
Overall, this game is proof positive that Nintendo had good game making on lock-down in the late 80s/early 90s. This game had it all and it is certainly something I look forward to revisiting. As a postscript, the sequel, Zoda's Revenge is also quite good.

May be the best NES game ever produced
Startropics, for those unfamiliar with this great game, is pretty much of the linear RPG type with some challenging puzzles thrown in the mix. You are Mike, who has just arrived at Coralcola to visit your uncle, Dr. J. You find out that he has been kidnapped and only you can save him.
Mike goes through the game equipped with a yo-yo. It proves to be a powerful tool, and it only gets stronger further into the game. You will most likely encounter some frustrating puzzles that seemingly have no solution, but have patience with this game. It is worth it when you figure it out. You will be tasked with conquering undergroung tunnels full of monsters, a haunted graveyard and more. Overall there is enough to do to take many hours away from your life.
This is my personal favorite NES game of all time, along with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, and if I could rate it higher than 5 stars I would. It was everything a game should be and I had a lot of fun (and frustration) playing this game. This is an essential title for NES owners, and can usually be found for cheap (under 10 bucks). Give it a try, I doubt you will be disappointed!

Saved Dr.J just in time for the 1983 76ers to win the finals
Great action/rpg that was overlooked and is very underrated. (I personally played it for the first time around 1996 when I had just purchased a Nintendo 64.) It is a very linear quest which some people seem to really dislike, (i.e. Anyone who gave Zelda 2 a bad review but enjoyed Zelda 1.) Much like Zelda 2, it is an awesome game even if it is linear which doesn't bother me in the slightest bit. Fun quests and intriguing puzzles make this game a classic and a must own. The control is odd at first but you get used to it pretty quickly and I got so used to it in fact that playing Startropics 2, which has completely different controls, was strange and did not have the same feel as this game does. Definitely check out Startropics, you won't be let down. By the way, sorry about the bad Julius Erving joke in the title but because they named the guy you have to save at the end of the game, Dr. J, it makes me wonder if one of the game programmers is a Philadelphia 76ers fan. Hmmmmmm...
