There's not a problem with this lil' guy.
I have a few VMUs (this being my favorite one what with it being green and all) and all of them are wonderful little accessories. Yeah it looks like a Tamagotchi, but so what? This is the coolest memory card I've ever seen. You can play a few mini-games on it if you have a game that features one, copy files to other peoples' VMUs on-the-go, and files almost never corrupt/get deleted. In fact, in the 3 years I've had my Dreamcast, not a single save has vanished on me for no reason at all. If I start up a new game, and it doesn't save because the first VMU in my controller is full, I just take it out while the game's on and swap it with the one in slot 2 and that's all. The game doesn't freeze or anything like a ps2 or GC would do.
I haven't played that many DC games (no more than 35), so I don't know how many games take advantage of the VMU during gameplay. The one I know about from experience is Resident Evil Code: Veronica. While in the controller, the VMU displays your health status right there. 'very handy instead of just going to the menu every few minutes to make sure you're doing ok. There are sure to be a lot of other games that do something like this. Shenmue sort of helps with the VMU: displaying directions on how to do a new move while you're learning it. Don't worry about having to look down from the action just to see the controller's window, it's very easy to get in mind, and it's not a chore at all.
About space being an issue...there aren't that many games that take up 5/6 of the memory. Sports games do tend to take up a lot of space, and a few select titles (Shenmue and Seaman), but that's about it. And if you're a big sports gamer, then I reccomend picking up the 4x memory card so you have everything right there instead of swapping VMUs constantly. The only issue that could be a real gripe is if you play a lot of mini-games. The reason being that the VMU's batteries die very quickly. I bought a new one (still in the box) not that long ago, and they died within a week. Actually, probably more like 5 days. But when they die, that won't affect your saves. The batteries just run the VMU's screen when not being used while playing on the DC.
With all that in mind, go out and buy a couple more of these. They're incredibly cheap now and hold a lot of space. Good job Sega.

the 4x memory card is way better.
the reason i gave it 4 stars is because of mamory capacities. the vmu has very litle memory. if you only have 3 or less games this is good for you. but if your planing on getting more games or have a lot already get the 4x.
the good things about the vmu is that you can play mini games like with chao on sonic adventure 2 you can view and erase files on the litle screen but the bateries get sucked really fast! you can also conect 2 vmu's to play head to head. for shenmue the vmu shows you what buttons to push on the screen if your learning a new move.

No Other Memory Card Can Compare to the Sega VMU!
The Sega VMU is simply amazing. It is not just a memory card, but it also shows the last time you used your game, a clock and games that you can download of Sega Net. It also has a great LCD screen which you can use to choose your plays in football games so your friends don't cheat. The only problem is the battery power is weak and it the VMU only holds 200 blocks which is just enough to save one Sega Sports 2K2. The Sega VMU is still a great deal for less than [money].

Sega VMU in green - Awesome!
The Sega Visual Memory unit is a great memory card! The LCD screen is awesome! It shows neat little graphics when you are playing a game, and there are mini-games you can download onto your VMU! The VMU might be the most advanced memory card on any gaming system out there right now! The only thing I don't like about the Sega VMU is that it only holds 200 blocks of memory. That's only enough to store one 2K2 sports game. But otherwise, this is a perfect memory card.

VMU Good
This is a good VMU. It allows you to play mini games on it.
The only thing that is not good is the batteries run out too fast if you play a lot. I think you should get it...
