Shenmue Review (continued)

Date: 2004-10-22 The greatest game no one played. This is my favorite game of all time. Virtua fighter mixed with an rpg! The most detailed and realistic environments I have ever seen. I played this back when it was originally released, and still have not played a game that can blend fighting, action and story together. It's like playing a Martial arts movie. Way ahead of its time. Yu Suzuki has made some of the most important games of our time. Along with Shigeiru Miyamoto they are in a class of their own.
Date: 2004-10-17 Most unique game ever. In Shenmue you play as a young detective named Ryo who awakes to find his father 's been murdered by an evil fiend called Lan Di. Incensed by this, Ryo vows to exact revenge on those who killed his father and begins a journey of revenge, violence, and furious anger (a bit like Kill Bill). Ryo wakes up at 09:00 AM everyday, and depending on your mood, you can do a whole range of things with your day. Most day's, however, you will spend your time looking for clues. Go around asking people whether they remember anything about the day of your father's death, and soon you will have a whole notepad of clues which will help you on your adventure and gather more clues.
For the most part, the fight scenes are quick reaction fights where you have to quickly press corresponding buttons to protect yourself from defeat. A lot of the time, though, you engage in Teken-like fights where you have to rely entirely on your fighting skills to succeed and move on. By pressing a series of different buttons you can execute a huge array of different moves, just like in Teken.
If you're becoming bored with your mission, you can sidetrack and do other things like collect toys, play in the arcade, listen to your walkman, etc...!!! And it's this, among other things, which add's a glorious feel of realism to the game. All in all, the experience of this game is so potent that you will find no need to visit Japan at all, for this is Japan. There are hundreds of different elements that add to the realism of being in Japan: The friendly neighbours. The corner shops. The vending machines. The toy machines. The beautiful Japanese architecture. The arcades. The buses. The peaceful tranquility of the place. It's a small, spordically populated Japanese town, which I could easily be convinced actually exists (it probably does exist actually). I love getting up in the morning and occasionally discovering snow outside. I love the crowded streets in the day time and the isolated disquiet at night. I love the way people's attitudes change as you progress through the the weeks, months, seasons. I love getting up in the morning and going to bed at night. It really is like a really exciting version of real life.
The genius of Shenmue lies in it's ability to merge two worlds together: The mundane and the extraordinary! I've reviewed a lot of games that could arguably be called the greatest game ever, but if I were made to make choice, I'd probably choose Shenmue simply for it's uniqueness.
Date: 2004-09-22 WORDS CANNOT TELL YOU. JUST FEEL IT!!!! Well... 4 years ago.. and I remember playing myself this game for the first (and VERY antecipated) time on Dreamcast... and how WONDERFUL it was... This game is one of those very few who can make you cry.. the more you play the game the more you'll be emotionaly linked to it. As some reviewers have said... the only one game that could be comparable to this.. is the first Zelda game for the N64 console... the soundtrack is amazingly immersive.. you REALLY make part of the real-beautiful-life of Ryo and his daily search for revenge... The graphics.. they're SOO amazing that it's hard to tell you... mindblowing freedom and aewsome interaction with almost everything you can imagine about (and with what you can't too). Prepare yourself to get into the REAL and really pure addiction world of Shemnue. The BEST and most innovate interactive game EVER. I really needed to write this review.. just to make justice to this masterpeace of sensitive programing. You REALLY need to fell the gamer emotion just in order to do such a rich emotional experience like this... !!!This game was like a therapy for me.. it makes me fell really good... REALLY GOOD. thanx Yu Suzuky and crew, for making such an inspirational piece of art.
Date: 2004-09-08 Well, I thought this was my fave for a while. This is a cool game. I like Japanese related items. Going through the towns, helped me to understand what it may be like over there.
Besides that, it sort of boring.

Date: 2004-08-24 One of the Best Games Ever Made! You know those adventure games that try hard to put you in the roll of some person while still keeping you entertained in whatever the story is about, but ultimately ending up failing and leaving you feeling disappointed? Well this isn't one of them. This game is so great and captivating that you will be hard pressed to put it down until it is over. Yes, it is that good and everything about it is a masterpiece. The voice overs are probably the weakest point but that is a trivial argument compared to everything else. The music and sounds are great and the graphics are fantastic. The developers really knew how to push the limits of the Dreamcast considering this game looks better than alot of X-box games. Anyways I would recommend this to people who want to experience a truly incredible game. Although newcomers should keep in mind that this game is not for those who are lacking in patience and this game requires backtracking and talking to lots of city folk. Its too bad Shenmue 2 didn't leave me with the same "Wow" factor that the first one did. Now I am looking forward to Shenmue 3 since it is supposed to be an MMORPG.
