One of the forefathers of the "tactics" rpg, and handheld!
This game is actually "Shining Force Gaiden 2" but translated and ported without a predecessor. Timewise, it comes closely after Shining Force 1 for Sega Genesis. And you will, of course, find some of those characters as welcome additions to your team (which, if you are unfamiliar with Shining Force, means 12 members instead of the regular 3 or 4 in a stereotypical RPG team, or the 8 or so from a "tactics" team).
Presumably due to the limited cartridge space, however, this game lacks any "real" explorable towns (even in the Sega CD iteration, which is better if you can find it, as it has a cinematic introduction, beautiful music that works in a cd player, and of course improved graphics not to mention two bonus adventures and the extra characters within them).
I wish you all could have played it when the Game Gear was more than just a conversation piece. This game is a required piece in a beautiful franchise that will, as most other dying Sega breeds, most likely be stripped and violated for gas money. Don't get me wrong, Shining Soul is a good game, but Sword of Hajya and Rise of the Dark Dragon (GBA) are the only true Shining Force handheld titles in the Western world, and the latter is a remake.

Best you could do
Well for being rewritten form shining force Cd for the sega cd, this is the best you could do.. there really is not a lot you can do from, town to battle only, no world map travel and nothing to get in your way. Lots of chars to find and get in your party, but only 12 can fight at a time.. It's top down and turned based fighting. One char attacks enemy and then it's over till the next can.. Not like Final Fantasy were then battle last till all enemies are dead.. It is still a very long and exciting game to play. (for being on cd first the turn to a game gear cartridge).

Shining Force, the only good reason to own a Game Gear.
Although the graphics are a bit old (what did you expect? it's game gear!), the spell effects are good and so is the sound. But what really makes this game good are the storyline, characters, and battle system. The story is about a sword that is stolen and you have to get it back, not very original, but it gets better. The characters are many and varied, including Centaurs, Elves, Humans, and Birds. I think there's 30 characters, but I'm not sure. The battle system is pure Shining Force, right down to the spell names and graphics. If you've played an SF, you'll feel right at home. It's a great game, really.
