Good game, but Wario is too slow.
You play as Wario, and this is a typical platform game. Jump on platform, jump on enemies (some of them).
To make things interesting you collect coins and treasure, there is hidden treasure in this game and you need to complete certain areas, then go back and find the treasure.
You need 10 coins to open the last door on every course, the rest of the money you can spend on 2 different minigames.
The first one is simply luck, you pick a bucket that you think contains a bag of cash. If you get right, you double coins, if you pick the wrong bucket, you loose half the coins.
The other mini-game (you need at least 20 coins) you throw bombs at enemies, time their speed of movement with how hard you throw the bomb.
Depending how many you hit, and how much you paid to play (there are three levels), you get different prices.
The rest of the money goes into Wario's treasure "vault" (rather screen)

The graphic and the music are really good for gameboy.

There are power-up hats for Wario to wear.
A viking hat that enable you to "butt" the ground so enemies fall over and crush blocks.
Dragon-hat that breaths fire.
A jet-hat that enables you to fly forward a certain distance.
And just the regular hat, so you can become regular Wario instead of mini-Wario (which you become if hit by a monster)

The game automatically saves itself, so you just turn the game off when you feel like it.

My biggest issue with this game is how bad Wario moves at times.
In the beginning, he feels a little slow and clumsy.
Near the end, especially when fighting bosses, you get irritated.
Wario mostly died in the game because he jumped to short or he moved to slow.
I mean, the guy walks snail-speed!
And most of the bosses are very quick, so even if you jump, Wario is so slow he dosen't get halfway up in the air, gets hit and dies.
And other time, he LANDS so slow after jumping, he lands in the faces of the monster and dies!
Talk about annoying!
The last boss just feels helpless trying to have Wario save the day, you are supposed to climb up on clouds and hit the boss head, but Wario is so slow the clouds fly away before he can jump up on them!
He also dogdes the boss attacks badly, like mentioned previously, if he manages to get away from one attack, he usually end up landing badly on a monster and dies anyway.

oh the memories!
Where to begin. When I was eleven, I wanted some kind of a video game. My parents agreed to get me a Gameboy for my birthday. Warioland dates '93, the first time I played it was on demo at Wal-Mart was in '94, so it was still relatively new. It didn't look as impressive at first glance, but I asked for it anyway.

Ha! Well birthday came, and I got them both! Then a funny thing happened...my dad got so addicted to the game he hogged it for the first couple weeks! HAHA! Now does that tell you anything about how addicting and fun the game is? I hafta hand it to my dad, he has more tenacity and would simply hack away at any game until he beat it. I remember he slaved away for weeks trying to beat Warioland...and I was still stuck one the first couple levels (when I actually had the chance to play it!)

Okay, finally he beat it and I had my crack at it, not to mention my dad knew the tricks to help me beat it, so no complaints there, ha. Warioland turned out to be much more complex, time consuming and detailed than it had looked on that demo station months earlier...my dad and I both marveled at how good it was. Talk about a stinker of a game to beat, some of the bosses and levels were just MEAN (remember the ghost of Parsley Woods? ACKPTH!)

The game ends on a particularly fun bang where you fight your way into the bandits castle and fight an evil genie as the final boss. I replayed that boss round so many times it was just entertaining. Needless to say, I replayed the whole game numerous times, and probably caused more wear to my Gameboy because of it. The poor thing looks pitiful now, half the screen is fried, but it was loved, and let's face it...both the Gameboy and Warioland earned their money's worth!

Best wario land game ever!
I have WL1,3 an 4 but i beat all of them. I played this a long time ago (first WL game i played) at friends house an i wanted a copy but gamestore didnt have copy of game at the time but they had wario land 3 so i got it (wario land 4 and the GBA didnt come out yet) then when gba an WL4 came out i got that but my friend didnt manage to get a GBA but got WL2 (luckily) an i played an beat it an thats how i beat all WL games. I played super mario land but not the 2nd one but i didnt really like it (its just me thats all). an a few days ago i got this game at gamestore! u should get it too cuz it leaves off after marioland 2 (i know the plot from end of SML2-WL4) ill explain the story

END of SML2- Mario defeated wario an got his castle back and warios attempt to take over marioland failed...WL3:SML3- Wario realy wanted a castle but didnt know how to get one until he remembered a rumor about a gang of thieves (forgot name) stole a giant peach/toadstool statue that mario ( yes Mario) was forever lookin for an Wario thot if he found it first, he could sell it for $$$ to the royal family so he headed off for his gold...and castle of coarse...this is where U come in to help wario on his journey....

You can get this game at some Gamestop stores, here from a seller, ebay, etc. its not that hard to find really an 15-20$ is a good deal for this game. WL4 is the easiest to get, then WL3, then WL1 (in my area) but WL2 is quite difficult to find...have fun with this game!
