A classic, but not really a Final Fantasy
A great RPG but it doesnt play anything like the rest of the Final Fantasy franchise.

Old schoolin'
The game follows the basic line of FF RPG hack & slash with cut scenes. It's decent if you're a big fan of the series, but can be very tedious. Every character can carry a GF - guardian force - that is this game's summons spell.
As for the other spells - There is no MP in this game! You need to pull (draw) magic from your enemies or draw points in order to have any magic. And remember to keep it stockpiled for the boss fights!

There's a card game in this game that (to me) is absolutely annoying. Even though the card game did carry over to FFIX, it was mainly abandoned after this game.

It's a so-so game in the series, nothing really new to it or innovative. No real stand out graphics. The plot revolves around to high school kids that slowly fall in love while trying to save the world with their friends.
Good for older gamers that have patience to fight millions of battles and learn a useless card game system.

Pretty good
In terms of the overall feel of the game, Final Fantasy VIII is about what fans of the series have come to expect. You walk around, randomly you're attacked, and you do a lot of battling to level up and become more powerful.

Without wanting to ruin any details, much of the plot is great. Squall is a fun main character, mainly because he's so reluctant to be the hero and yet he does it so well.

The big problem is that its special ability system tends to encourage an awful lot of grinding, so you have to brace yourself through occasionally having to drag yourself through lots of killing that isn't really furthering the plot.

Still, on the whole I enjoyed it.

Final Fantasy 7 is better?!? Hah!
THIS is the definitive Final Fantasy game and I don't care what Final Fantasy 7 fans have to say about it. It has better graphics, better gameplay, better story, and more interesting characters(sorry Cloud). The fact that I beat FF8 twice and never got past either disc 2 or 3(it's been too long since I played for me to remember) on FF7 has very little to do with my opinion of it. I enjoyed playing FF7 but I enjoyed FF8 10 times as much. If you like realistically drawn characters rather than anime-type characters you will like this game's graphics. I would recommend finding either an official strategy guide or a well done fan made version if you want to find all the hidden items and side quests as these are quite useful and fun to find to boot. Excellent game.

FF7's more complex younger brother. (That doesn't make it better)
...ok first off I can't get over how different the artwork here is...it's just so typically american...tee hee...anyway...

This game would probably come second to best FF next to FF7. Although the junction system can seem very complicated, that doesn't mean it is. It's actually very simple: you use magic to enhance your stats and resistence.......that's it!

The summonings (also known as GF's, Eidolons, Espers, Aeons etc...)have been made more complicated by making it so that you can use them to learn new commands like turning monsters into cards. However as a party you can become very dependant on these monsteres because it is so much easier just to watch them take off heaps of damage reagrdless of what you do instead of attempting to get a weapon upgrade. And watching the cutscene of them killing monsters over and over again can get tiring very quickly. What I do is only use them in boss battles and try and learn J-Atk as quickly as possible to increase your own attack......you'll understand.

What this FF game is the first to do is create a card game. It is very addictive and is weirdly enough more advanced than the card game in FF9 (mabye they were trying to go for simple addictiveness) and trying to find every single card can sometimes absorb aaaaaaaaaaaall you're time until it's gone...be careful.

Buy it! Then Buy FF7. What? You've already bought it!? Well then sell it and buy it again.
