Soul Calibur Review (continued)

Date: 2004-04-19 The game looks great but... Soul Calibur is a classic example of all icing and no cake! The game looks great and sounds great, but its too easy. The game that is supposed to be the game for "die hard fighting fans" is basically a walk in the park. The game is a button masher! I played the game and found that "turtling up" and waiting for the right time to attack or throw is all that it takes to succeed and it even works on the higher dificulty settings. My major gripe about the game is the dark and demonic story lines. No God fearing person should touch this "demon sword wielding" game (I began to discover the different plots after I played it). I'm not trying to sound like a fanatic but come on why all the demon intense plots in a generally evil game. What sick minds came up with this anyway? If the game had a better plot (one that involved some thought) then it would be a classic, but as it stands...no.
Date: 2004-04-06 Hall of Fame This old game is an instant classic and would probably be regarded as one of the best fighting game of all time. This is a very deep fighting game. I would not even go to graphics, most games nowadays look good anyway. What stands out in this game is the fights. The motions in this game is fluid and very intuitive. A couple of reviews noted that a person can simply mash the buttons and win. That is true only if you have 2 novice players. Novice players are no match for the skilled player no matter how much mashing they try to do. This is the beauty of this game. The mastery it takes is different than other fighting games. Mastering one character is not enough either. Two of my favorites are Mitsurugi and Cervantes. To me, they are different in the sense that play absolutely differently. Mitsurugi requires patience, lots of it. He is the master of counter attacking opponents. Cervantes however is more effective as the aggressor as his combos can be chained together better. The value of this game too depends on who you play with. Even with the computer set to ULTRA, they can still be beat constantly (not easy at all). Playing against a skilled player, priceless!!!.
Date: 2003-12-06 Soul Calibur by Namco Awesome! Definitley worthy of a five star rating. We often played this game at work for hours where the competition was intense mitigated by outbursts of laughter. Some people preferred the zen type characters, others the more direct powerful but slower brutes complete with axe or broad sword and shield. Just some sophisticated combo moves which really surprised. Loads of enjoyment. Would love to be able to purchase this game in New Zealand!
Date: 2003-12-02 Hands down, best fighting game ever Hands-down, this is the best fighting game that I have ever played. The fighting system is deep and complex, but doesn't have the huge learning curve that Tekken does. I have heard people call battles played by expert players to be like a dance, with blocking, parrying, dodging, and a variety of attacks used to keep your opponent guessing. A good selection of characters are available, though some are just mirrors of other characters with a few different moves. There is also a practice mode that helps you to learn button combinations for the 50 moves for each character(pretty standard nowadays, but Soul Calibur was one of the first to do this to my knowledge). The soundtrack is excellent, the gameplay is excellent, and it's just an overall awesome game. Back before the ps2/gamecube/xbox came out, this was the REASON you bought a dreamcast. If you dont own those 3 systems and can't get Soul Calibur 2, get the original. It's very much worth it.
