Date: 2002-08-21 If you like RPGs, you like Pokemon Red Pokemon Red. What an idea. Let me tell you a little bit about this. You start off in your house, in front of your SNES system. You go downstairs, and leave your house. Now you can walk about, talking to characters. You want to leave and explore, but you don't even take three steps into the grass when you're stopped. An elderly man runs to you (actually it's Professor Oak, a Pokemon expert.) He warns you it's dangerous in the wild, because of the untamed Pokemon. He tells you you need a Pokemon of your own to protect you. You walk back to his lab with him, and he has you choose a Pokemon. There are three on the table (in Pokeballs of course) and you must choose one. Each is a diffrent type (fire, grass, and water) and each one has its strenghs and weaknesses. I'll tell you about each one:BULBASAUR - The grass type Pokemon. In final form, he turns out as the weakest of the three, although he still has power. He has a secondary type of poison, which lets you have more moves of diffrent kinds. He is the Pokemon for people new to this game. SQUIRTLE - The water type Pokemon. In final form, he is strong, but not incredibly. He has a secondary type of ice, and he is my personal choice. He's the Pokemon for those who aren't awesome at this game, but have played it before. CHARMANDER - The fire type Pokemon. In final form, he is amazingly powerful. He has a secondary type of flying, which helps him out a lot. He's the Pokemon for experienced players who want a challenge. What I mean by easy to train, moderate to train, and hard to train is this; Bulbasaur is very good against the first two gym leaders (which gives you a boost in training), Squirtle is very good against the first gym leader, but bad against the second (although it still gives you a training boost, it's just smaller.) Charmander isn't very good against the first gym leader, and terrible against the second, which gives him no boost in training whatsoever. After you pick your Pokemon, you fight your rival (who picks after you.) It's a difficult battle, but it's usually easy to win. From there, you have two objectives in the game. 1: Go from town to town, raising your Pokemon, catching wild ones, fighting trainers, and collecting items. The trainers will be at your level if your raising your Pokemon correctly. What's really fun about this game is you can raise up to 6 Pokemon at a time. You want to have one of each type (fire, fighting, lightning, psychic, grass, and water) to fight trainers and win more easily, although that's not required. It's a large part of the game, because what you raise is totally up to you. 2: 150 Pokemon exist in the Red & Blue versions, and you have to catch them all. Some are easy, some difficult, some only appear once, and some you have to trade. You're probably thinking "what the heck is this ... talkin' about" but I'll explain. Red & Blue are the same game except for a few Pokemon. Some only appear in Red, some only in Blue. Because of that, you have to use a link cable, and trade. With the cable, you can also battle. Pokemon Red is a very strategic (and fun) game that will keep you occupied for hours. But are you stuck between the choice red over blue, or blue over red? Personally, I chose blue because I like the color blue. It really doesn't matter though. I hope you found this review helpful, and good luck on your game!
